Could the cheap fuel be dodgy?

Here's a question for you lot, I recently found a pretty cheap shell garage in the city at 93.9 (still at that price now), I'm not sure if my bike started backfiring at the same time but................

I have been using the garage for around 2 months now, roughly the same time my bike has, for no reason at all, begun backfiring on the overrun.

I was low on fuel one night and decided to pop to my local texaco at 95.9, as i was well into the reserve i can only assume that the fuel i had just put in got to work in the engine straight away, the backfiring stopped as soon as i pulled away from the forecourt.

Could this be dodgy fuel?

I have a 650 V twin carbed engine that pops and burbles on the overrun as standard. (Most transalps do this)

I might try an experiment and fill up there again just to see if it starts banging.

could be a possibility..could also that you ran the fuel so low,you picked up some muck from the bottom of the tank,fill up with fresh fuel,but fit an in line fuel filter..cost about 2-3 quid from a car shop(buy a clear one so you can monitor the fuel and filter condition) tim Mr. Green

why do people think that running low on petrol "draws crap from the bottom of the tank"?? where does it come from usually, again? Confused

There is a possibilty that while the surface of the fuel is low, the fuel will be 'sloshed' around more than if the fuel level was higher.
However, there should be a gauze filter on the inside of the tank just where the fuel leaves the tank and enters the fuel line, perhaps the gauze filter was blocked a little.

I wouldn't expect a Shell garage to be selling iffy fuel, if it's cheap there are likely to be more customers to that garage and so the fuel tanks will be replenished regularly. IMO

One of the Shell stations in my town sells cheap fuel but its the same as any other Shell fuel. Its just that Tesco is across the road so they had to bring the price down to theirs.

Bikes don't seem to be as forgiving as cars when it comes to fuels I have found unless its a CG125 of course, geez I'm sure they would run fine on anything you shove in it. Perhaps you got the "bottom of the barrel" for all you know.

Could have been a one off. I would be as curious as you and try again on the next fill too Thumbs Up

Back fire could be leaks in the exhaust.
You could have hit a bump on the way to the 'dodgy' gas station.
Stick a wee bottle of redex in the next tank load and kick the shit out her.

It does move with the body of fuel - the difference is the level of agitation it receives. The lower the fuel level, the greater the agitaion.

You can't easily control what goes into the tank via the fuel nozzle either.
