looking to run 2 x cameras on my bike (one front and one rear), recording direct to a hard driive under the seat.

ive seen them small pcb mounted cameras, but they dont look like theyd be good enough quality

any idea what sort of camera set ups i can buy to achieve better quality without buying an expensive dv camera and tank mount etc

also what sort of "controller"box will i need to operate all this.

i only ask here cos im sure one/some of you have this sort of set up as well..

any websites with info/instructions/stuff for sale etc would be helpful too

cheers!

I would venture that whatever you came up with would cost more than a DV cam would.

I'm looking to do this with a small computer and firewire webcams at some point.

I definitely don't expect it to be easy. I doubt the quality will be great. It would be a lot easier and cheaper (if you want decent qualiy) just to use two camcorders to be honest.

I've looked into it before, not really possible. You'd need a PC with a (or 2) decent vid capture cards. 2 little camera's and the software to control the vid stream etc. It's really not gonna be worth it unless you wanna start building a micro PC, which will get expensive.
I'd just got for a DV cam or 2 Very Happy

What about my nice dell laptop in my rucksack with 2 USB webcams in? would that work? I know the quality would be poor, but will I need a RAID array or something to be able to record 2 MPEGS at once?

Nah thats a silly idea Smile

Kev had a webcam-laptop setup a while back (before he swapped his laptop for a bike). It worked fairly well, but the quality wasn't up to that which you'll get with tape.

Bullet cam to recording device seems to be the way to go for maximum quality and ease of use too.

At work we've got an Omneon video server. Records Broadcast quality video from a DV mini helmetcam type thing.

Maybe I could strap one of those to my back Laughing

Lets see. Media ports? Check. Manager PC?. Check. 7 disk RAID store? Check. RAID controller machine? Check. Monitor? Check!

Damn. Where am I going to put the keyboard?! Laughing Laughing Laughing

In your matching touring panniers? Wink

If you want to record 2 sources at once (and at fairly good quality), then you'll most likely need 2 cameras and 2 recording devices (either DV cams or walkmans). I was thinking about making an inline switch so that I can manually change cameras on the go...
