Buy a TV card with an input, can get them quite cheap now, £20 kinda thing.

Run a lead from the output of your VHS machine to the input of the TV card, run a free bit of software to go with your TV card, and it's done!

This is how I do it anyway. I know that some graphics cards now have a combined s-video in/out port, so you could do it like this, but I've no idea how, and a new graphics card will be expensive.

Edit:
https://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=36428

With the card, you can also watch TV on your computer too, which is good!

Um, not for VHS he won't be Laughing

Pinnacle DC10+ for me, about £100, takes any analogue input.

Exactly what VHS content are you wanting to 'study' at work then?

I have a Hauppauge USB TV card and that has a S-video input or regular TV ariel input.

Assuming i have all the connectors etc to link my VCR to my TV card, what software do people here recomend for video editing, prefereably something i can get for free via download/Kazaa.

I haven't had much joy with cheap TV cards, but the above (which isn't a TV card, but an analogue capture card) is bulletproof.

I used to have a TV card when I was at university. I wanted to get around not having a TV license...
Anyway, I had an old VCR that I connected to my TV card, but I couldn't get any sort of picture, and the sound quality was terrible. Also, The TV card itself wouldn't let me record more than ten seconds off of the TV.

It had teletext that worked, but thats about it really. That cost about £75 and was made by Pace.

I would say, either find a decent TV card (you won't be sure unless you manage to find a review off of the internet)
Or pay the £100 and get the card that Bendy mentioned above.

Pinnacle Studio 8 is great for editing and capturing. You should be able to DL it for free, or I can try and burn you a copy Very Happy
I've had a TV card and a USB capture thing and they're both shitty. I've seen what the DC10+ can do and it's impressive enough for the cash.

Great, something else to look forward too.

More crappy christmas' with family who cant really stand being around each other and would rather, if they were honest, chew off a finger than be in the same room forcing those smiles that make your face ache.

I'm considering opting out of christmas entirely this year. I spend a fortune in money and time travelling up to see the folks cos I feel guilty, and then have a miserable time... Confused

I actually like Christmas as I get to see my family.

The bit I don't like is the buying presents for others. 1 or 2 would be alright but when I have over 20 close family (ie brothers, sisters, nephews and niece's) it becomes a very expensive do.

I do always get a very good present thought, granted its off me. Very Happy Last year I got a CBR, this year I got a mini moto. Laughing

Who was it uses Pinnacle software on here?

I got it off Kazaa yesterday, installed it, and the upgrade, and another upgrade and it seems to have a lot of usefull functions in it but, it takes forever to detect the scenes from each video clip. Is there any need to have this on? can you turn it off?

What speed PC are you using for it? i have 1.3GHz + 256Mb (2x 128). seems really slow, but then, my PC has been slow for some time now and i dont know whats up with it.
