I am (hopefully) being given a damaged bike tonight that I'm planning to fix up - as his garage is only round the corner my plan is to walk it home. The bike is unregistered and has no plates, and will be uninsured. What is the legal situation on this (if I'm just pushing it), and if it is illegal what are my chances of actually getting prosecuted for it?

I pushed a track bike totally stripped about 1/4 a mile to my house, alongside a main road.

No-body stopped but if they had.... the lad I bought it off was a cop, and he walked to mine with me.

Dont think its illegal, what do they rathe you do? Ride it?

Thumbs Up

IMO I can't see that it would cause you any problems, as long as you don't actually ride it, and make sure that you don't cause any obstruction to traffic etc

Technically it shouldn't be within 6 inches of the road in any direction as it dosnt have road tax.

However I can't see any Police Officer being that officious about it, you may get stopped just to make sure it isn't stolen but that's going to be it.

Its still an offence to have it on the public highway(which includes the pavement) if its not Taxed and you can be prosecuted for it. Even if the bike is SORNed it shouldn't leave private property. But it would have to be a very P'd off officer to prosecute if its only around the corner.

Just don't hang around when your taking it home and there shouldn't be a problem. Thumbs Up

Don't do it drunk either.

I know that's a pretty obvious one, but I remember reading a story 'bout some guy who pushed his bike home from the pub or something, had a helmet with him, and his bike keys. He got stopped and questioned, then arrested for some offence about being in control of a motor vehicle while drunk? (I think). Anyway, the cops didn't lock up his bike at the scene, and when the recovery van arrived, it'd been stolen.
