I have the mini review right in front of me, and it says:

Quote:
Put Bluntly, it's a waste of money

... and then mentions that "paying nearly four grand for a 125 is a form of madness", but it recommends that shelling out a few extra quid for an Aprilia is fine!...eh?...am I missing something here?

At the moment, I have not particular bias as I have not yet ridden either bike, but I have ordered an NSR purly because of the reliability factor...

I spoke to a bloke in Fowlers (a dealership in Bristol), and he tried to flog me a used Aprilia with 9000 miles on the clock, for £3000!...and he kept on mentioning that he will be getting another one in soon, which is "practically brand new, only a week old"...which made me think "ok, but why is the guy selling so soon is the bike is supposed to be so good?"

...Also, then I asked the sales person about the reliability factor of the Aprilia, and said something along the lines of "...the Aprilia can be very reliable, you just need to look after it and change the parts regularly..."

Anyways, I won't get a chance to go too fast around the city centre anyway!...

I hate to be the bad guy here but would have to agree that I think shelling out £4000 for a 125 is crazy!
At the end of the day (however fast you think they are) they're still a 125. For £4000 you could buy a lot of bike. Even my bike (Less than a year old GSXR750) is only worth ~ £5000. Crying or Very sad
I think (just my personal opinion here) people are better off getting an older 125 - thrash it for while - learning how to ride and then getting a bigger bike. Your first bike will usually get dropped at some point and the depreciation on new bikes is just not funny. Bigger bikes often have cheaper insurance too.

Hey - just my opinion.

Hey grandad...

That's a fair opinion, and would have to agree totally if I was to take up a serious biking career...but I'm still a "cager" at heart...

...actually, what I have just said doesn't really make sense, oh well...

what I really mean is that I generally like to buy things new anyway...I would prefer to know exactly how it has been treated etc...and it really isn't that easy to find the perfect used machine...
...take my Aprilia example: it has done 9000 miles, it looks generally clean etc...but I can't help feeling a little ripped off if I was to pay £3000 for it...ok, so I could possibly knock it down a few hundred, but still...

Because I'm more used to cars and car prices, bikes are very cheap!...and they don't really vary as much as cars...for instance, a Honda Civic Type-R goes 0-60 in 6.8s and up to 146Mph and costs £16,000. One would expect to pay over £25k for a BMW with similar performance specs...and you could pick up a brand new bike with better specs for less than £7k!!

Just my little rant...

I'm not suprised that yet another magazine is slagging off the NSR. In fact, in the back of 'BIKE' as a used review of the NSR, it states that,

"....italian 125's out pose and outperform it..." Crying or Very sad

I remember SUPERBIKE racing an NSR and an RS around a track (cant remember which track) and basically the NSR got slated real bad, soggy forks, no front end confidence, down on power, bland looks etc, etc.....

I don't suppose they took into account reliability, comfort (especially for big'uns like me), parts availability etc..........just lap times as usual.

As for paying 4K for a 125, well I sort of regret not buying used BUT all of the people I know who've bought used strokers have had all sorts of trouble....plus I like the idea of a warranty and a new bike to show off!

4 grand is alot of money for a 125, they are only 3,3 ovever here. They should be new at 3 grand IMO. The NSR gets alot of bad write ups but we all know how good it truly is

........I aint slating the NSR....I find it better than any other 125. These mags just piss me off thats all. They know that if you race an NSR vs RS round a TRACK that the RS will piss all over the Honda.....but thats not a road test is it!?! I'm sure that if a test was devised about the pros and cons of owning each bike "long term" then the honda would piss all over the RS!

Just my opinion thats all...... Very Happy

Superbike magazine, fair enough... they're not exactly looking for reliablility or comfort, but I think the bike review was a bit dodgy.

Personally I wouldn't buy a new 125, or any bike, for that matter. Save, perhaps the *very latest* sports bike (assuming I had the money) as that way you know the extra grand or whatever will be giving you the absoloute best handling you can buy.
Also if you get an older bike you don't have to be as parnoid about dropping: though looking at me knees that might be a bad thing!

For anyone under 21 I think the NSR's a perfectly good bike to learn on and then derstrict for the 33hp limit. Also learning on a small bike will make you a load better rider than going straight to a restricted bigger bike.
And there's the reliablility... my NSR's been sitting in the garage over winter, but will still start first or second time after not being touched for a coupla months. MY flat mates TZR, in similar conditions, needs loads of bumpstarting.

from my research, though- the depreciation on new NSRs and RSs is better than a lot of big bikes, at least for the first year or so. year old NSRs seem to only lose about 20-25% over the first year, which is pretty good...
all assuming you keep it in fine fettle, obviously...

Hi

In alot of ways £4000 is silly money for a 125. I paid £4500 for a Bimota Dieci, 2 owners from new and only 4500 miles on the clock. Hell, it is another 20000 odd miles until the valves need touching.

However, the Mito, NSR and the RS are all around the same price. That is alot of money IF you only intend to keep it a short while. I bought my RS new in October 1993, so the depreciation over time is not too bad! The biggest problem is that any first bike (and most of these sports 125s are first bikes) is very likely to get dropped. They are also likely to be owned by people who are learning how to maintain a bike (I suspect we have all done really silly things to our bikes at one time or another). None of this helps depreciation

My view is that if you are passing your test and then keeping the 125 for close to the 2 years of a restricted licence then go for it. If you want to pass your test then immediatly then sell the sports 125 to buy a bigger (restricted) bike then you have more money to spare than me!

Looking through mags you can pick up a fast 125 for very little money. I picked up an Aprilia Sintesi for £300, which needs some work. Even including a fair amount for a respray this is likely to only be around £1200 tops all in for a bike that will be immaculate. OK, maybe the mains will go wrong, but with £1800+ in the bank saved from buying a new bike you can do alot of repairs (new engine price for an Aprilia is about £1200). Performance wise that bike will be about the same as an NSR ( and the kind of difference will be small compared to the effect of 2 different riders).

Oh, by the way, if you know anyone who is having problems getting engine spares for an RS125 then tell them to contact Peter Knight on 0176 141 4106 (www.rotax.co.uk). The guy is a very helpful and friendly Rotax specialist, keeps plenty of stock and will willingly help with technical problems.

All the best

Keith

bike and accssory companies dont take 125cc bike serious anyway which i think is a fucking joke, there must be thousands of 125cc bikes on the road. "M&P" say they stock accessories for all bike BOLLOCKS they do fuck all for the rs125, they dont evan have the mito in there data base and the only things they do for the nsr is a few silencers and thats only for the 98 version Sad i mean what the f$ck is going on theres obviously a market for 125's. Evil or Very Mad
if sombody in this country decided to start making single seat conversion kits for 125,s (nsr, mito,rs etc) they would make a fucking killing because no other cunt makes them in this country and i dont no about you guys but i cant be arsed to get one from germany. Evil or Very Mad

(sorry about the language but im quite pissed off)

is there a market for 125's? where I live in the north east I never see any on the roads and I've been looking to buy one for months but their just aren't any to be had. Anyone with a full license will go out and buy something with a bigger capacity for near enough the same money, while people my age (the under 21's) seem to wanta ponse about on scooters instead. That only leaves the few of us with A2 licenses who want 125's, so no dealers bother stocking them, the bastards.
