There's lots of obvious choices, big sports bikes are one of them.

BOth bikes will go fast, with the 600 only about 15-2mph faster than the 400. The big difference is that it will require a lot less efort to go fast on the 600 and will get to very stupid speeds a fair bit quicker.

While acceration is nice, a 600 can get you into a lot of trouble very quickly...
If this is your first big bike I'd suggest maybe either going for an older sports 600 (if you're not allready considering that) or something like the sv650.

Personally I don't like sports 400s for general riding because they lack that low down grunt which means you can just turn the throttle and bugger off. However this does also mean you're less likely to go sliding all over the place thanks to greasy roads in the british winter.

NNNNNNNoooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Not another 400/600 thread! Takes me back Very Happy
It all depends on the money you have to spend, how much you got for insurance, if you want a bike you're gonna get rid of in a year, how old you want the bike to be etc.

You're not big. Just short. Razz

You can get away with looking non-twat the majority of the time, but there are always those pointless back-pedalling-up-a-hill moments that make you look like a right div Very Happy

Tell me about it Embarassed you soon learn not to park your bike so you have to push it back out of a space before getting back on it. Laughing

Get an older VFR and learn to thrash the bollocks out of it. It will teach you great things Laughing

Yeah thanks for that Dean. True some 400's are physically small (VFR,RVF,CBR etc) but not all of 'em. Demonic had a RF400 which was pysically as large as a 600 and the ZXR400 ain't too bad either. A lot of people who have bikes bigger than the 400's seem to slate the bikes for a lack in power, however I loved my NC30. It handled great and provided me with plenty of speed. Okay so it isn't as fast as my YZF but it taught me a few things and was more forgiving than the YZF is. You just have to ride the little bikes a little different thats all.

But as mentioned if you are over 6 foot you may be better on a 600, just so you don't make a little 400 look like a minimoto Rolling Eyes

Get a 600. If you buy a 400, you will get bored of the power and want something else in a couple of weeks anyway.
Alternatively, get a Firestorm. They are a big bike, but they sound nicer than any 4 cylinder bike and are an insurance group less than the new 600s

Rolling Eyes

Buy a sports 400 or a nekkid 600. That is my opinion. Smile

I didn't get bored of my 400 for ages. Part of me wishes I had the non intimidating power and fantastic handling of my VFR. There's nothing more satisfying than carving up bigger bikes on the twisties. Except maybe wasting Porsches in impromptu drag races.

I would say either get a CBR400/VFR400/RVF400 Or, An SV650/Hornet 600. Thats the best choices of first bike IMO. Or do both like I did! Smile

If you want sporty go for the 400's and if you want practical/upright then you want the 600s. Cool

Thats a good point.
Hornet 600s are lovely, and so are Speed Fours.
Go on, buy a Speed Four, you could be the first owner of one in Britain (I know someone somewhere must have one, but I have never ever seen one on the road/at a rally/bike meet)

Speed fours are very expensive for what they are... but they handle like no other bike apparently.

They are ugly IMO, and I know a couple of people with them. They are happy if jealous of other better looking bikes Smile

I got bored with the 400 too easily. That may have just been because it was an RF400 but by the looks of it most people on here got bored soon enough.
If you've got the cash go for a slightly older 600. They tend to hold value a bit better than some of the newer bikes and should be a bit less to insure. An old-ish CBR6 would be less to insure than a new-ish 400.

No I mean they handle well!
Put some 2p's in the top of your forks, get new tyres and do the brakes... that might help Razz

Tyre chocie is very limited (ie BT45 is considered /very/ good for it)
Apparantly I need a bit more than 2Ps... but can be done along with some new fork oil and some straightrening Confused
Brakes... If I remember I did bleed them... so a total service and some decent pads, if they're available for it might help.
However I would also be tempted by a whole new front end Smile.

To be fair, 'Good handling' is very subjective... depending a lot on the rider, their riding style, their mood, the road surface, the time of day etc Smile.

Honestly mate, your first year of riding your going to make more mistakes than any other time "ever" on a bike. if you crash a shiny 600 it cost you alot if you buy a 400 for a grand to practice on then you can't really lose.

I couldn't agree more. I just didn't have time to say that the speed four is reputedly an excellent handler on real British roads in real conditions, with an average rider on board.

I've seen an RD350 Special for sale on biketrader.co.uk that has an RGV250 front end... it looked cool Smile

I really do not believe no one has mentioned this already... (wheres Ste when you need him?? Razz )

Why don't you wait until you are actually close to being in this position (i.e. in 3~4 years) before you make this choice.

I was working Razz

And its Tom-RG who is 13/14 i think. However if KD is as well, whats the point in looking and deciding now?

I went to a 600 with no problems. You have more power, which if you are stupid can get you into trouble. But you can also do this on a 400, or a 125 so its down to self control and sense really.
