I'm just curious cause I saw this today and it really annoyed me. Not only does it give bikers a bad reputation, but if anyone happened to hit into this guy (or vice verca) then they would have to live with the fact that they caused some idiot to suffer sever head injuries, if not killed them. Its just wrong. Still debating whether to report him or not.

Very probably report him.
Although that may be kind of hypocritical of me considering I went helmet-less on Tuesday to a good friend's funeral.

It's the trainers and no gloves I object to Laughing

Aye, because before the helmet law came in in the 1970's anyone who jumped on a motorbike died instantly.

Don't be a clipe, it's his own head, he can do what he wants with it.

But does it count, we stopped traffic at every round about, blocked a dual carriage way, went past Police head-quarters and passed a Police car and they didn't try and stop us so it couldn't have been illegal could it? Wink

I totally see your point on that one, the only thing is that in the 70's nobody was riding round on CBR-RR sports bikes and speeding round like a numpty!!

Very mixed set of opinions - fun to see what you all make of it. I guess it depends on what experiences you've had in the past to what opinion you have on this issue?

Its not as if hes endangering anyone elses life, so if he wants to be a prat let him. I would report the guy who owns the bike for letting him on without a lid, because he is clearly breaking the law and not being responsable enough, if he can't keep to the most important law about rideing well then... No, they were wheelying about on highly tuned 250cc 2-strokes with drum brakes, bendy frames and minimal suspension. They rode them on a provisional licence with no formal training whatsoever.

Just because the bikes didn't have the same top speed, doesn't mean people didn't ride them like lunatics. People have ridden bikes about like lunatics ever since there have been bikes.

To quote a famous example. Lawrence of Arabia died when he binned his 1000cc v-twin Brough Superior in 1935 after riding it way too fast into a hidden dip only to find two cyclists in it. Every Brough Superior was garaunteed to do 100mph and they were advertised as being faster than a Gypsy Moth aeroplane. They have rim brakes.

I put the 3rd option, but only because reporting him would get nothing done. They wouldn't follow it up based on a single picture taken on someone's camera phone. They would have to catch him in the act. I would hope he gets caught around the next corner and then just forget about it.

I really can't believe how many people have been brainwashed into believing that it is overtly dangerous to ride without a helmet.

IF you fall off, a helmet might give you a bit less chance of sustaining serious head injuries, assuming you hit your head.

As I have always said, the trick is not to fall off in the first place.

Under normal riding conditions the wearing of a helmet makes not a shite of difference to your safety. It ONLY comes into play during the fraction of a second where your head sustains an impact with something solid. The whole of the rest of the time, it is a big lump of polystyrene that obstructs your peripheral vision.

Not wearing one doesn't make you a 'dangerous' rider, it certainly doesn't make it a foregone conclusion that you are going to die if you come off any more than wearing one means you are going to survive. If you come off your bike at speed and hit your head on something solid, you are going to die, helmet or not.

As for it being the most important law about riding, get real! I'd rate things like riding on the left side of the road and stopping at give way signs as important.

The actual importance of wearing a helmet is to me vanishingly insignificant. What's important about wearing helmets if if you are caught without one, you get a fine. It is one of those laws I only obey because there is a high chance of being caught if I disregard it.

I would no more 'report' someone for riding without a helmet than I would for them having a piss in a laybye or smoking pot in their own house.

Seriously??? Thats insane!! Basically I started this cause I took the photos to show my wife as a giggle and we got chatting about whether this was an issue or not. My original opinion was to let him be an idiot, but then I thought he is risking scarring someone else's conscience if he has a crash. But I guess if he is going to be that stupid, let him. We've all done stupid things - just most of us choose to do it on private roads or off-road, not in the middle of Cardiff on a Thursday afternoon!

My favourite moment was when the rider decided to pull off before the light went green and caught muppet-features by surprise making him grab hold quickly. Always fun!!

In the first pic, in your wing mirror, is a Merc with an L plate on it. Looks weird. People must be doing alright in Cardiff.

well spotted Harold, I was so busy chuckling at the guys on the bike I hadn't even noticed that! Funny thing is thats the "rough" part of Cardiff too! Wouldn't mind having to have learned in a Merc... come to think of it, wouldn't mind driving one now!

Leave him alone, it's his life and body and he can do whatever he wants to it.

Just out of interest, what sort of touble are you likely to end up in for riding without a lid?

Nope. 3 points and a fine. Take it you won't be sending the pics in now? Wink .

i said rideing, what i meant to say was the laws specific to rideing a motorcycle, not general road laws,
helmets also stop wind in your eyes, and bugs from hitting your face, and as for that brief second of impact, if you come off at say 30mph and hit your head, i know for sure you would probably live, whereas with out a helmet, im guessing the chance of you dieing is greater than you living.

I think you are grossly underestimating the advantages of a helmet, sure they are inconvenient 70% of the time, but i know for sure i dont want bugs in my eyes and if i do come off, i dam sure want my head to have a better chance of seeing the next day in one piece. Its the same reason you buy the gear with the extra bit of padding or that fits slightly better.

I do agree with your points, but i think the advantages of a helmet, significantly outweight the disadvantages.

just checked about the using the phone thing and it seems if you aren't using any form of communication its ok - ie. if its just being used as a camera, you're not covered by the mobile phone law. Seems a bit ambiguous though, so wouldn't risk it. As I said, I originally only took the pics for my wife to giggle at.

iirc the law changed at the beginning of the year to include all data receiving devices.
