Ok just to make it clear i am not one of these people that go out in shorts and t shirt with my helmet perched over my ears

jackets, gloves and helmets i can understand and do pay good money for

BUT

£200 for a pair of boots?

Surely in a tumble/crash the force of you hitting the floor will be transferred through your boots anyway shattering your bones the only bonus i can see from buying them is the extended shin protection - which most leather trousers/race suits have anyway!

So is there any specific shock absorbing/ damage reducing features or physics built into motorcycle boots over any other supportive footware?
because no manufactors have so far convinced me i need to spend my dosh!

well the ankle protection and shin protection will stop your ankle from breaking, dislocating or w/e else you can think of.
Imagine coming off your bike, looking down at your foot hanging limply from your foot, and saying 'oh shit if only I had some boots!'
There's a video on youtube i'll post it in a min...

A local guy where i now live was in a bike accident where he nearly lost his leg, two years on and he still has a cage around his leg. He told me that the doc said if it was not for the strong boots he has to hold things in place that he would have 100% lost his lower leg. He is getting the cage of soon and tbh what else are you going to spend the £200 on booze? It does not have to be £200 just get a decent pair.

TBH i got T-Boned (hit side on) by a black cab only doing 30 but it was bad enough to badly brouse my ancle and shin, if i had trainers on my ancle would have been broke if not worse.

But will it? surely the impact will be the same volocity with or without boots so the energy transfered will be the same

i can see nothing in a pair of boots that will protect you only hold your shattered remains of a foot in one place

aa you see your not thinking about it in the right way, your ankle doesnt break by just impact (well it does but your foot only falls a few cm's when it comes off so thats not an issue) the only way you can break your ankle on a bike is by you landing akwardly on it, say your foot gets stuck under the bike and twists, of you fall from your bike and land on your ankle which will snap at the speed, the boots wont protect you from a 50 foot fall, but they will stop your ankle from snapping and twisting, think of them like hiking boots, they stop your ankle from twisting and stuff, which is the only way you can break your foot on a bike... Thumbs Up

but they dont! supportive boots only disperse an injury accross the muscles its supporting

if you twist your ankle in trainers the damage is concentrated to the area twisted

but in a hiking boot the pain is less as it is despersed through the muscles hence the larger area of swelling!

i understand the principle of twisting however a very serious twist would not result in a cage!

so supportove footware is essential! but bike boots are not specificaly equiped to deal with a collision merely adapted to suit?

anyone a phisiopherapist that can shed expert light into the mechanics of injury?

Nixon mate it might not be so much about absorbing impact but the already aforementioned preventative action against twisting and tearing.

I saw a picture of a guy with his bike peg impaling thorugh his foot through his expensive boots. First thought is, well boots did sod all. But if it wasnt for the boots holding the peg still whilst crashing it may well have ripped his foot in two.

They also help with internal bleeding as they maintain pressure along the foot and ankle, just imagine your foot in a regular "boot" or set of trainers and you smack your ankle off a sign pole. Good chance your ankle is going to come clean off mate.

Either way I'd rather spend the £100+ to keep my feet.

and your leg that is potentially trapped between the bike and the rough road at 30mph is okay?? Smile

Best to have it and not use it, than not have it and when in physiotherapy wish you had had it. Smile

Havn't read all above as i can't be assed.

Bottom line, your better protected with proper boots.

It's then your choice whether you decide to invest in your safety.

I took out a roadworks triangle sign other week with my shin, if i didn't have mine on, i'd have broken me leg, massive bruise but the armour on the boot deflected/blocked the sharp object penetrating. Made it a blunt thud.

If you dont want boots, dont get boots, simple. Dont just oppose everything everybody says.
Boots will support your ankles against a twist and protect your shins if nothing else. Noones telling you to buy boots, you started this thread and people are trying to give you advice, if you dont want to listen, cool, but dont just go against everyone, theres not alot of point

id recommend buying off ebay secondhand

last year at the nec bike show, i tried on some sidi boots to find out what size i was in their boots.

so recently i bought some second hand ones off ebay for £40 that would have been £120 new.

ok they are slightyly scuffed and are a few years old, but they are pretty good.

for commuting i use some boots i got from hein gericke 2 years ago new that were about £40

they are easier to walk in but dont have the armour that the sidi ones do

I spent £100 on my boots.

When riding my NSR I have had two low speed spills, I won't go into details but both times the bike has landed on my foot, as in my foot as been trapped under the bike. Each time I have worn boots and my feet have been fine but I am very confident if I was in trainers or going any faster I would have injured my foot.

Its just the way the bike lands I think, you are very likely to get your foot trapped.

Oh also one time I landed with my body still wrapped round the bike, my right foot was on the exhaust, if I was in trainers would have burnt myself, I was in boots.. no burns.

Right ive jumped right in here without reading any posts.
I ride a Bandit GFS600N - Not that powerful to you sportens but enouth for me.
I got these boots - rip off price, but said 'good protection' blah blahblah (Nitro)
I paid £120ish for CE approve protection - rubbish cuntish boots id never buy again. Rubber/leather fair-ish use but no way would they protect me from either ankles breaking. They would protect my skin - But that is it.

All I would say, same with the Lid - Buy the best you can! Wink

First day on a scooter I managed to drop it on a roundabout. I was only wearing trainers and my foot got stuck between the fairing and the road, I came off at probably no more than 10mph, I've still got a scar after 4yrs. Don't think I've ever worn anything that didn't at least cover my ankle since then.

Once in 4yrs have I ridden without a jacket and gloves. I rode my bike all of maybe 500m in the centre of London down a quiet back street.
Now I never go out in less than boots, gloves, jacket and helmet. All of which fit nicely!

i am asking

is there any specific shock absorbing/ damage reducing features or physics built into motorcycle boots over any other supportive footware?

and i am not going against what everyone else says - its called a conversation Rolling Eyes
