Hey all

So I've got my test at the end of this month and wanna get rid of my XR125 and get a restricted SV650.
I've already worked out I shouldn't have a problem selling my XR for about £1200 and then getting an SV including getting it restricted if necessary for about the same price, albeit a slightly older model.

Thing is, what do you reckon the biggest difference in running costs will be?
Fuel - shouldn't be that much more to run.
Tax - £32 a year more.
MOT - same.
Servicing - not sure about this one, about 100 quid more but needed less often?

Any other things I should particularly consider? I do know the insurance will be about the same...

Thumbs Up

(7 year gap), BMW F650 (Relaxing ride). Aprilia Caponord ETV1000 (Big and bold). Yamaha FZS600 (got me in trouble too quick!).
Current: Yamaha TDM 900 (Comfy, light but big, power when needed).

Fuel will be quite a lot more, I got 85-90mpg even thrashing my XR125, I get 50mpg or so if I thrash my GPZ500 now and the SV650 is likely to be a bit more thirsty than my bike. Insurance is very unlikely to be almost the same also. Servicing you could learn to do yourself for the basic things like Oil and Filter changing for example.

So parts and servicing are likely to be the key most expensive differences... Insurance is virtually the same, I pay about £185 for my current bike fully comp and the same cover on an older SV650 is around the £210-£220 - that's with my insurers Ebike.

Although petrol will be more expensive, I can't imagine a daily 20 mile commute with the occassional 'outing' would make a huge difference.

Thanks guys! Thumbs Up

If you do the same mileage on a bike that uses twice as much petrol, then it will cost twice as much. And I bet it does use about twice as much gauging it from my bike.

As Stormer says, fuel will be double - so depending on your annual mileage will dictate if its a lot more money. Double a fiver a week isnt much, but you're much more likely to take an SV650 out just to thrash a tankful of petrol through it for the sake of it than you are a 125.

I spend at least £25 a week on petrol and I dont commute anywhere on it Very Happy

Tyres and chains will wear quicker, and be more expensive to replace. I dont know what the SV650 uses, but I reckon you'd need to budget £150 for tyres every 5000 miles.

Well fuel costs at the mo are about £5 a week, so double that won't be so bad - even if I do a run into the country ever now and again!
So far I've done about 3k since xmas so again, will be more expensive but not overly so... looking good so far!! Laughing

By the way tax will be an extra £49 not £32, as the SV650 is in the highest tax bracket.

You're right, I meant that. Just glanced at the tax price list I have next to me when I was writing and accidentally looked at the next price up for my bike! Wink Thumbs Up
