I was just curious as I have recently passed my car test (first time! Very Happy ) and want to do the bike test next, I have a friend who passed within two lessons of a bike test, I'm referring to the DAS, any replies appreciated...

They are as hard as one another but each requires different skills.

It's like saying which is harder, A-level physics or A-level geography?

Well I passed my car test first time, 5 weeks after my birthday with 15 lessons and 3 minors...I personally found the bike test harder, took about 20hrs ish lessons, passed 2nd time after no riding experience. Couldn't get the varying road positioning and constant 'life savers' and other petty things drilled in, tried doing things how I would in a car.

I know of people who have done it all and passed within a week, but then I know someone who has failed her CBT!
I've heard of lots more simple fails for the bike test though...like 'pull over on the left' then them doing it and with it being a certain marked area on the road they've failed them.

Personally I found the car test harder due to the manoeuvres. However I passed both first time (car with 5 minors and bike with 2 minors). Also with the bike I was riding around on my CBT so I had much more practice before the test (over a year).

I found the bike test a walk in the park, it was the easiest thing I have ever done. I have had a car licence for 6 years though.

You probably know this now but lifesavers are even more essential in a car! It stops you from killing bikers!

I cannot drive for toffee, I am a dangerous driver, and as such, do not drive. I found the car test very easy!

Bike test wasnt too bad for me. Apart from an arsehole instructor the first time round.

Car test I know is going to wind me up, hate the 10 and 2 o clock positions on the wheel and turning at 12 and 6 o clock. Damnit, why cant I turn the wheel how I want cos I got more control that way then doing it their irritating way.

huh?
emergency stop, reverse/parallel park, reverse round corner...

if you find that difficult then your not fit to drive a car imho

try it with a 7.5tonner - technique is do it slowly with lots of observation

either test is easy if your safe and in control of your vehicle

life savers save your life Brick Wall

at the end of the day neither of the tests are easyer or harder than the others as they are testing you to the same criteria in any test you take with the DSA to ensure you are Safe and Competent in the vehicle your using.

observations, procedures such as MSM ect, attitude, anticipation foreward thinking and the rest is exactly the same if your doing an A1 test or a C+E articulated lorry test

the only main differences being the handeling of the vehicle and specific things related to it

so if you have mastered the skills of driving one then as long as you dont just throw all those skills out of the window like alot of numpties do then you shall have no problems with any test you decide to take

thats the way i see it.

I'm learning to drive in a 1970 Vauxhall Viva Wink

It doesn't even have any rear seatbelts.

Yet they are quite happy for you to drive with your thumbs inside the steering wheel which can result in both of them being broken in even a minor crash. Anyone remember that Top Gear where Clarkson crashed that <£100 volvo into a wall and broke his thumb? Wouldn't have happened if he'd kept them outside the wheel.

both different but its down to what you are better at

+ a few other factors, like, instructor @ the time,road conditions,pedestrians,.etc,etc

Good on you! I practiced for my test in my 1970 Minor but couldn't take the test in it because apparently you have to have a head-rest for the passenger seat. I had a black 1958 Minor for a while (i.e. until it failed its MOT due to being a total rust bucket) that didn't have any seat belts at all plus pop-out trafficators - I'd love to see what they'd have said if you tried to take your test in that!

if you have a brain both are very easy.
if you ar a nervous bunny then both are hard(if you get nervous should you really be on the road?)
people who cant pass the current tests shouldnt be allowed to operate the remote for the telly because they are jellybrains.
and should be banned from retaking thir test for another year.
the test is a minimum standard not a driving/riding god status.
the test pass is an admission that you are shit but have at least had a go at the rules.
no pass = stress bunny =dont go on the road.or brainless idiot=dont go near anything at all ever.

I found bike test easier than car test psychologically though... except when the bstard examiner asked me to put the gs500 on its mainstand.. uphill... I nearly dropped the bike on him....

I believe (hearsay) that in Germany, once you fail your test a certain number of times, that's it, you can't take another one and are effectively banned from driving for life.

When I got in the car, I had trouble with nerves, was sooo dedicated to passing, it made me nervous, I could drive fine, even when my instructor got out his pad to do a 'mock' test, everything went tits up.

So, I found the bike test easier, as it's easier to concentrate with someone 10 foot behind you than it is with some fat lump 1foot right next to you, with his fat spweing over into gear changing territory.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had this with my examiner. Not to mention his asthmatic wheezing making it hard to concentrate on the road.

Sound guy though - passed me even though I locked the wheels on the emergency stop (it was icy) and did 30 on a 60mph road for about a mile Very Happy

I always drive with my thumbs inside the wheel - it feels wrong not to!

On-topic: the car test isn't really all that hard. Although I don't know about the bike test because I've never taken one.
