Right then, I'm trying to make my bike go from looking like this:

to look like this:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/img_7710smaller2.jpg

(Thanks to vee for photoshopping that for me Thumbs Up)

I've never done any frame modifications before but I'm not really super worried about messing this bit of the frame up because it's not my main bike but obviously I don't want to just ruin it either!

I have no idea where to start to be honest. Here are some pictures of the back of the bike without the seat on it:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/smaller2.jpg

Has anyone done anything like this before? Any idea's on where I'd cut and then re-weld the frame back together? I know I'll probably have to get someone else to do the actual welding bit for me but I want to try and do as much of this project as I can so I can learn about all this kind of stuff Smile.

Would I be best off cutting the frame where the arrow is in this picture and then weld some lugs/mounts for the indicators, grabrail and all the other stuff?

Any ideas on how I'd then re-attach the seat?

Any help is much appreciated!

what id do is cut just a bit further back

and cut out this section

https://img409.imageshack.us/img409/2857/smaller3daveye1.jpg

you could probably cut a bit further

then id re weld it onto the frame if your wanting to keep the same back end that is, it looks like you do in your P'shopped image

Those boxes are just the catches for the seat so I'd imagine that'd be no great loss as I'd probably need to bolt the seat down anyway.

I'd prefer to keep the same back end if possible really.

Will I need to brace the frame after I've cut it to give it a bit more strength when it's all put back together?

May I strongly suggest you have a look at some of the following

https://www.thefont.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/bikes/index.htm
https://www.chopperbuilder.co.uk/portal.php
https://www.britchopper.co.uk/forum/

as you might gather they lean towards the chop style, but they are open minded , its more "custom" than just "chop". The people on it are also generous with advice and guidance, including some professional frame builders. Pretty much all the questions you have asked will be answered on at least one of them.

From the pics however it looks like all you need is a loop of tube to round out the end, slugged into the seat rails at the point you cut them off.

Been thinking about something similar for my ZZR, cus I wanna try make it into a single seat setup.

Are there any other issues, legally, regarding cutting up a bike frame? Surely someone has to say whether it's actually road safe or not...

If you mod the frame at all, you legally need to have an SVA test done on the bike and a new registration issued.

Best bet is to keep quiet about it and insist the mods were done ages ago (ie, before the SVA regs came in).

How much of a big deal is it then?

I've hacked a load of shit off the back end of my 550/4, and when I get back from camping in Scotland I'm gonna finish it off and hardtail the bugger, in a sort of bobber style.

Would it be prudent to take the bike to a different MOT tester than I went to last year (baring in mind it's quite a distinctive bike, he is likely to remember having tested it before looking quite different)? If I did take it to him and he kicked up a fuss, would I just have to go elsewhere or could he blow the whistle on me and get me into trouble?

I didn't realise all frame modifications needed to be inspected. In the case of KLR600, he'd only be modifying the "subframe" Thinking

MSVA only applies if the bike is less than 10 years old. the MSVA stuff is on two of the sites I listed above. Also the main man for MSVA regularly goes on the 100% biker site (workshop area) to answer questions. Also, IIRC its only structural or "major" modifications that require MSVA, so either way its not really an issue.

THE bike is an XJ550 I think.

It's a 1991 Yamaha XJ600. It doesn't have any of the plastics on it at the moment though, I'm going to try and make some panels out of checker plate. They're cheap as chips, there's a few on ebay at the moment and they generally go for about £500.

They're cheap to insure aswell but I don't know how cheap it's going to be after I've done all the mods to it.

Big Pete, Thanks a lot, that's exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for Very Happy Thumbs Up
