I know this is bringing up an old thread, but its alot more easier than you think, if you got the money for it.
I've been toying with it as i have a spare engine and being a motorcycle mechanic, can do alot of things myself.
My bike is a 2005 Carb'd Varadero but i also have a 2006 bike which is personal spares.
Looking at major engine and fuelling tuning, based on the weight loss, and the power gains, i dont see why my bike shouldnt be able to produce 22.5BHP.
although once im going to bore it out to from 48mm bore to a 52mm (anymore than this you will go into a water jacket! and just for sh*ts and giggles whack some Hi comps in,
The major "restrictions" are Exhaust headers, airbox and fuelling,
the exhaust headers have a core tube restriction in the front header and a manifold and pipe decrease on the rear (ever notice the different sizes between the 2 pipes?)
The front header has a O/D of 36mm with a wall thickness of about 1.5mm and the rear has a O/D of 25mm with same wall thickness.
the reason for this is basically honda being smart and using back pressure to basically restrict the motor by its self as the front cylinder with get slowed by the rear, because of the effort to push gases through a smaller diameter pipe. (blow through a calypso drink straw then through a normal one, same principle) and its like engine braking in reverse.
you can either get a set of new headers made up custom to remove it and increase the rear cylinders pipe from the 25mm to the 36mm, but there is frame clearance issues, unless you go round the outside of the frame. (Dont be fooled into thinking the Motad headers etc are all unrestricted headers as they have them in, probably to stop being sued by Honda)
You can get sports cans for it, but to be fair they really only make a louder noise, at most you may get an extra BHP after all the work from it.
i've gone down the route of modding the standard can and knocked 2 of the baffle plates that are tack welded in and its ready for the tip to be welded back on for testing.
You can get a little more top speed running the valve clearances a bit looser (known from personal experience and tested by genuine source), i dont know remember what they were before i did it,
I managed to clock 92.2 Mph on a standard motor, standard exhaust, running 99 Octane Super Unleaded with NGK Iridium Spark plugs, as i got done for speeding by the police on my way to work one morning and they measured it over a mile dead with their VASCAR system.
The airbox has a rubber bung in the lid under the tank on the carb'd models 2001-2006 its at the rear and the FI bikes 2007- on its at the front.
There is the option of playing with the power curve by changing the shape and length of the inlet tracts in the airbox maybe for more low down grunt they use the ones from the VT125 Shadow?
and the fuelling is slight issue as honda put smaller jets in the rear carb due to cooling but not only is it water cooled, they use the same heat range spark plugs, so it cant be that much of an issue, if you had serious issues with cooling on rear cylinders you'd go down a heat range.
I use NGK Iridium Spark plugs as i find they make the throttle response more crisper and it does actually go quicker! (*note* all Varadero's made as of 2007 (FI) Iridium Spark plugs are OEM Fitment)
End result and thats including new camshafts, free flow filter, Jet kit, the bore out, high comps and maybe a ever so slightly thinner Head gasket and all the other add ons and there is a possibility of "achieving" 25-28BHP.
and with the weight loss i've committed to doing on it, i think a genuine 100mph on one is possible, after a wreck i've already binned the front plastics and streetfightered it, and there is gonna be more weight saving, but thats gonna involve more carbon fibre lol
I'm only doing it as it makes it more different, yes you could try and slot a different engine in, but wheres the fun in it?
I hope that this Helps anyone who's not afraid of a challenge and the costs involved.
I actually have the Genuine Honda Workshop manual so if you need any specs i can try to help. ____________________ 1st....2nd....3rd....4th.....into 5th......6th field and stopped in a heap! |
