i know im in no position to be questioning my instructor, but theres some things he just 'didnt know', and they're pretty major things!
one thing... i know for a fact when manouvering past a parked car, you dont need to indicate unless you cross onto the other side.
he said i didnt need to indicate at all! its confused me a bit...
the other one was mini roundabouts,
he said that he doesnt know whether or not you need to indicate when turning right on mini roundabouts!
i thought you treated them as junctions :S
his excuse was 'i did my training up north'.
can anyone clarify this? im after what the test requires, not what general people do as my test is on the 20th and id rather not cock up on something i was taught wrong.

In respect of passing a stationary vehicle, he is correct, and in fact even if you are required to cross over the centre white line you do not need to indicate, just start to position yourself early so that in itself will indicate your intention.
The argument is that bearing in mind we are only a third of the width of an average car, if the driver behind cannot see that we need to go past a stationary vehicle, then there is something seriously wrong with that driver, but additionaly by giving a signal it could cause confusion with other drivers, particularly approaching, and even more so if there are junctions on the right in close proximity to the parked/stationary vehicle.
Rememer the signal is a signal of intent not achievement.
In respect of mini roundabouts, treat them for the purposes of giving a signal the same as you would at a right or left hand turn at a normal junction. If turning right, just give the right signal, if turning left give a left signal, and if continuing straight ahead at the 12 position do not give a signal at all (I am talking about mini roundabouts)
If you are going to give a signal, you should try and allow at least 4 flashes of thre indicator before changing your position as this will allow other road users sufficient time to react, and it will keep it in the context of signalling intent rather than achievement. ____________________ It is better to arrive 30 seconds late in this world, than 30 years early in the next |

thanks for the replies.
the reason im questioning is because i was taught one way by one instructor yesterday, now today im being taught this new way which doesnt feel as safe as the other way.
today i went the whole day without having to cross onto the other side of the road, so ill just pray that i dont have to on my test ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. Can't comment too much on the bike tuition thing as it may differ ,but I have been a driving instructor for the past 14 years (car).
When we pass cars in a car we try to give at least 1 metre clearance (bikes 2 metres),as for the signal well if we think it would help other road users,or would it cause confusion IE are you near a right turn.Always signal at junctions.
As for mini roundabouts always signal right if turning right and left if turning left,as for signaling left to leave if you train with BSM they will give you the "will it flash 3 times",well how do you know unless you do it.
I would say(and the DSA examiners) if you cannot manage a signal safely due to steering then don't bother,
when going ahead you should signal left to leave, however will it confuse other road users (normally does as they are a thick bunch).
The Highway code is far from perfect and does tell you to treat mini roundabouts the same as normal ones. The code often throws up more questions than answers .
Hope this helps

To be honest on a mini roundabout if you signal right to start then switch to left just before you turn off, it will not have started flashing left till you are off it...
I just let my road position tell drivers where i'm going.
If you feel the need to indicate then just do the right as you are comming up to it. ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |
