pc upgrade question?

i want to upgrade my mother board from a pentium 4 to pentium core duo. my question is? can i use my existing hard drives and video card etc?? and if i can will it be as simple as plug in and go, or will i need to format and start with a fresh install of windows?

It all depends on the hardware you already have...
If youv got IDE drives for the old machine then its more than likly the new motherboard will be SATA and they wont fit...
Memory will be different as well...
I take it the graphics card you have now is AGP and the new board will prob be PCI-E..

i just built a amd dual core system and was able to find a motherboard that still had IDE support on it. (got 900gig of porn i didnt wanna throw away )

Most have gone to sata but if you look around you should be able to find something.

As Col said you might be hard pushed to find a mobo with AGP still.

I know they did some with agp and pci-e as a cross over but I dont know if you will find those with support for the duo-core cpu.

Alternatively if you can get adaptors that allow you to run an IDE hard drive on a sata mobo. Pretty cheap to.

Your windows should boot no problem once done but you will probably still need to load the new drivers etc that come with the mobo .

For me anytime I do a new system i always do a fresh install. Yeah it takes a while to get all the updates again and have it fully set up but having stuff installed for an old system just doesnt make sense.

Might as well give the new system the best chance of running a full capacity

If you really want to use an AGP card and old style DDR RAM, then you can get this board, the has full 8x AGP lanes and a 4x PCI-e port, also normal DDR slots and DDR2. An OK upgrade motherboard.

Sell what you have and buy everhthing new, get a decent CPU's. mobo, gfx, memory and a fast harddrive.

If you are building a PC you might as well do the works, a PC isn't all about the proccessor. Moden games will run shit (if at all) without a modern graphics card, hdd's and ram aren't all about size either, the speed that they run at is very important older stuff will slow the system down.

The benefit of an upgrade is the cost.
You can replace the parts as you want without having to shell all the money out at once.

Thats why you upgrade the cpu and board first to get running and then change the other bits as you can..

Depends on how often you are going to upgrade tbh, if you can only afford a good board and CPU give it a few months and get a GFX card and by the time to buy somthing else your stuff is quickly gettting outdated, IMHO is save and do it all at once with the best stuff you can afford.

Ive upgraded my computers in the past and spent a fair bit of money on them and tbh i would have been better save and buy what you can.
