Computer CD drives not working

Does anyone know why my CD drive would suddenly just stop working? This has happened before so i just brought 2 new dvd writer drives and it worked fine until now! the jumpers are correctly set, but it doesnt even detect them in BIOS now! does anyone know what this might be?

I take it there ide?
Swap the two ide cables over (just change the cables to the alternative socket on the motherboard)and then check in the bios again.
If their not detected again on the other ide channel then try a new ide cable.

Is it getting power to the drive ie does it open and close?

Not pioneer by chance.
Ive heard and had experience with them just dying like that.

Other than that, do the simple checks first. Might save a world of effort for something simple.

As said check the cables.
If ya have a spare try it on the same power cable and ide cables.

then mix it up if something isnt working.

When you say stop working, do you mean not even recognised or just wont play dvds but will do cds.

Have you changed anything lately ?
Any updates even ?

Go in to your device manger and check if there are any conflicts, altho unlikely.

Also whats the chances of a restore ?

May not help or give you the answer but all worth checking.

Dont suppose u have another pc u can check them in ?

No point in going into device manager as the drives are not detected in the bios.
Bios discovery is the first and foremost to resolve..

I think when the problem is fixed at bios level windows will be ok
Certainly no need for a restore, reinstall or anything this drastic.....

How would this be solvable at the bios level?? the drives do have power and they are pretty much brand new so im thinking theres a problem with the motherboard or something!

That meant that the drives need to be found at bios level before worrying about what windows is up too..

If you have more than one dirve remove the ide from one of them and reboot see if it pick is it up? If not try attaching one to the same ide as your hard drive and check jumpers settings.

right well the cd drives have miraculously started working again withou me doing anything!!! but im trying to write cd's and it fails every time, this has been happening since i restored my pc, it always stop at about 6% and says write error, does anyone know why it would do this?? thanks

What software are you using?
Have you had the same problems with the batch of disc's you bought?
Can you listen to music cd's ok via that cd drive?

ive used both nero and cd clone and other different software none work!

ive used both the cds and dvds and it has effected both that worked fine previously

yes i think they are fine to listen to music i will check that when i get home!

again the drives were fine before i had to restore the pc!!

Personally i would disconnect one of the cd drives and leave one connected..
Then use it as normal and try all the daily tasks it used to run without any problems. If it fails (or it dosnt) i would then swap it after a day or so to use the other drive and run the same tests..
This might prove it is an issue with one of the drives..
