Hi folks,

Just as an amusement I flipped my gear lever over so that it was in race pattern - i.e. press down to go up gears, and press up to go down gears.

Has anybody who regularly uses an inverted lever like this got an oppinion on whether it's better or not?

It didn't take long at all to get used to...

I can see the speed increase when changing as you accelerate.

Is it hard to do? I might do it to my TZR for a laugh.

Thumbs Up

I've always wondered how easy it would be to do too, but never really bothered. How did you do it?

What he said. Surely you can't simply flip a lever over...unless you're now changing gear with your heel or something silly Laughing

Ridden with race gearing and it's tricky to get used to. With a bit more time on the bike i'd be alright i think.

Well usually you push down on the lever and it makes the connecting rod push forwards...

if you change around how the connecting rod is connected to the lever, pushing down can make it pull the connecting rod instead...

It's really easy to do...

The gear shaft itself, just turn the bit that attatches to that upside down, and voila...

Get what I mean?

See the nice bright bit that's currently pointing downwards that attatches the foot lever/peg to the gear shaft? Take that off, turn it upside down (so its pointing up not down), and voila...

is it just me or can anyone else see the point?
don't get me wrong im not bashing you are anything but, racers only do it so they can select a higher gear coming out of left hand turns at silly angles of lean.

so personally i can see no reason for it on the road.

just my 2$

cheers

It's used so you can change up the box going round left hand bends... i had a go of my mates race bike with it on (in the wet on the track) and its difficult to get the hang of. You think youve got it but suddenly you change down instead of up and... RING DING DING DING *back wheel locks up and swearing follows*

I dont see the point on a road bike really, because any other bike you ride will be normal pattern!

Cheers, Daz.

Wotcha.

I take it you haven't ridden many pre-unit BSAs then ?
Or Moto Guzzi Nuovo Falcones ?
Or Royal Enfield Bullets ?

Yep - they all have the same gear shift pattern. Up for down, and down for up Laughing
Just for good measure, the bloody thing is on the right hand side too - just where God intended it to be Wink

You can imagine the fun I have when I take the Kwak out - everything is all arse about face.

I've wondered about this for race use in the past.

However having talked to people, it's often not the best idea to be in situations where you may be riding bikes of either style fast.

Obviously on the road you'll have a bit more time to think about stuff. But then say you take a mate's bike out for a quick thrash, I'd be rather worried that I'd forget and knock it down rather than up coming out of a corner at the red-line - which usually sees the rear losing traction and then the engine over-revving if you stay on.

I've had this setup on my bike for the past couple of years now, had a couple of bad changes the fist day I did it but no problems now.

It just seems easier not to have to move your foot under the leaver when accelerating hard.

The consequence of one thoughtless moment could be very bad, so it's a bit risky, but I do understand how tricky it can be to shift up when cornering with a normal pattern box.

Most 100 and 125 cc bikes with a few exceptions in the far east and africa have the all down for higher gears pattern.

iv got it on mine & wouldnt change it back ever now!, & would also do it to future bikes aswell

not only is it the racing thing of coming out a low left & going up a gear so you foot isnt stuck under the lever, but its also a more natural movement & when your ragging it its so much nicer to `stamp` rather then the more UNnatural ankle movement

+ you get less false neutrals from 1st - 2nd as its not so `gentle`

i love it, tho it does take a week odd to fully get use to it

My bike has it as standard 4 down 4 up, i find it easier than having my foot under the gear leaver all the time in an unnatural positon.

Hi, my race bike is set up like that and it took me about 2 race meets to fully get used to it to the point I didn't have to think about it.

First couple of times I went out and screwed up a fair bit, one time almost managing to highside the bike coming out of a left hand bend when I accelerated hard and then changed down a gear!! Shocked Brick Wall Was a good job it was quite a slow corner and my clutch didn't explode. Clutchless upshifts felt really un-natural aswell.

Hated it at first but now I'm used to it, I prefer it.

Was weird getting back on my road bike after my first race meet, as my brain had only just got used to the upside down set up and then I was asking it to switch back to normal. But now I can switch from one bike to the other without even thinking about it, and any little thing like that is a plus imo.

Ive often thought about doing this but never really got round to it. All this talk of highsides and locked up rear ends doesnt make it attractive, but would my slipper clutch not deal with any unforseen inverted gear changes for me?

I dont think a standard kwaka slipper clutch would do much if you knocked it down a gear from the redline, and if your on a bend.
Bye bye

My TL has a slipper and if you knock it down really early the back does lock.

My CB1 came with the shift rod upside down, which the previous owner prefered. I didn't have much trouble adapting, but didn't find it any better or worse than normal - not scratching the left hand pegs at the time though. I reverted back just to stay conventional.

Well after riding with the reversed lever for a while now I think I prefer it quite a lot.

Definately a few times I've distinctly noticed it was beneficial - And i'd say it feels more natural.

When youre braking for a tight bend or a junction or somesuch you can easily move your foot under the lever for the downshifts as you'll be repositioning anyway, whereas when you come out of the corner your foot is already in the right place for shifting up without having to reposition it.

Luckily as this is a new bike for me and I've set the lever like this from the outset, it didn't take much reprogramming of my brain.
