Bit of an offshoot of Itchy's thread, but I just wondered who believes in Global Warming here and who doesn't.

Personally I think it's a load of crap, especially after watching the Channel 4 program 'The Great Global Warming Swindle'.

The planet goes through changes constantly, and has done for millions of years. Whist we have an impact on our environment, the current scaremongering is just an excuse to fuck with the masses and wring more money out of us.

seems like a excuse to tax the crap out of people.

earths temperature changes in cycles so it could just be warming up naturally

edit: what shaggy said

I said yes, but to qualify that I'd like to say that although I think the average temperature is definitely on the up, and that there has been some strange weather over the last decade or so, whether it's all down to us is a different question.

I also watched the C4 documentary and it made for interesting viewing, but has since come in for criticism from the scientific community.

I will say that we all have a responsibility not to abuse this planet, it is our home and our future appears to be in doubt if we keep behaving so badly. There's the definite need to strike a balance between caring for the earth and progressing as a species, if the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Also the earth has gone through many cycles of change over the millenia it's just unfortunate that humans are now here to a) contribute to the change b) report on the impact of it c) suffer the consequences.

But as a species were doomed anyway and the sooner we get off this rock the sooner it can recover... unless of course a "god" steps in a puts it all nice again Mr. Green

if anything it made some counter arguement , denying global warming to some people is worse than paedophilia.

funny though how some lefties use the green campaign to take on the great satan (the US) when China became #1 C02 a few months back.

See Shaggy's post.

The Earth has always been through cycles of warming and cooling. It has also thrown up oddballs too. The ice age 10,000 years ago most certainly was not caused by Farmer Giles in his landy, was it?

I like the Futurama angle.

'Wow, look at all this snow. Thank god global warming never happened.'

'It did, but nuclear winter cancelled it out.'

'We have to look after the planet.'

'Why? It's not like it's the only one we've got.'

My dad said scientist back in the 80's warned of global warming and no-one listened, I think what's happening now is just like Shaggy said, but climate change is another matter and I'm unsure on that subject.

Hi

Depends what you mean by global warming. Greenhouse effect is real, and if not this would be a frozen lifeless ball of ice.

Man made global warming? That is another kettle of fish. Man probably has pumped a lot of extra CO2 into the atmosphere, and that probably has increased temperatures. However 2 probables added together to increase the temperature by a small amount does not mean instant catastrophy.

There is a lot of rubbish talked on both sides about man made global warming. For example those blaming the odd freak weather event on it (normally just means they have a short memory so have forgotten when it last happened). The argument is that an increased global temperature will melt the ice cap and so disrupt the flow of warm water up the atlantic that keeps the UK warm, hence UK temperature would drop. Blaming a bit of cold weather on this when global temperature have barely changed and the flow of warm water is the same as always just shows up people who are clutching at straws for their catastrophe of the month.

By the way, the phrase global warming has fallen out of favour. They prefer climate change as that way when temperature fall rather than rise (and any rise in the 28 years of accurate data we have is tiny) then it can still be blamed on man made CO2.

All the best

Keith

Personally find the whole global warming thing to be a crock of shite , and no doubt about 80% of the worlds population do as well , minus hippies and do gooding scientists.
Why do they never tell you that volcano's and animals release MORE gases into the atmosphere than humans, oh yeah , cause they want everyone to feel guilty that we are killing the polar bears. Fuck rite off! I'll contine to live life as I see fit, that often includes using hundres of galons of fuel every year Twisted Evil Middle Finger

I agree with most views expressed in this post. I think climate change is just another way of the government controlling/taxing people.

im not sure where i heard this, but apparantly man is responsible for 3% of global CO2 emissions. apparantly if we work hard we can lower this by 20% by 2050. so thats 20% of 3% of carbon emissions we can stop in 40 years Neutral

The further north you go, the clearer it is that the Earth has, indeed, been warming for quite some time. Even in my childhood, we used to have easily 1-1.5m of snow from late October until early April, with temperatures below 30-35C, now we often have less than 0.5m of the white stuff from Christmas until mid-March, with temperatures dropping to barely below 20C. We could still see snow in Lapland in July, but not it's not likely to survive until May. White Christmases are no longer guaranteed. Sad

Global warming is happening.. technically.. the Earth is getting hotter, you can't deny it there is evidence.

Did man do it? Doubtable, man has a very minimal effect on the Earth compared to something such as a volcano, they spew out much more carbon dioxide than we do, also they spit out a hell of a lot of carbon monoxide which is worse. Volcanoes have always been erupting.. the earth is still here.

The Earth goes through cycles of temperature change (I can't remember the name right now). But the basis is the Earth's temperature increases and decreases as the Earth goes through periods of axis wobble, where the planet doesn't get the right amount of light so cools or heats up. Also every so often the Earths orbit becomes more oval than circular so we get more periods closer to the sun.

There has been proof that the Earths temperature has massively increased and decreased over millions of years, its natural. Currently we are (looking at temperature patterns) on an upward temperature zone, So the temperature will be going up. Soon it'll get to a max and start to cool down again.

The biggest problem with the temperature increasing is that a 1 degree Fahrenheit increase at the equator is equivalent to a 12 degree Fahrenheit increase at the poles. Obviously this has massive effects on the ice levels.. But really this might not have such a massive effect on us.

What I can't get my head round is how people can't accept that the climate is changing and instead of doing anything about it we're playing the blame game, trying to work out who caused it and why..

Thats not gonna help anything, the reality is temperatures are going up and sea levels are rising. What needs doing is investing in our future survival rather than cutting back on our C02 emissions, cause as soon as a volcano pops its top it will how countered all our efforts.

When people wake up to the fact that we are going to start encountering some really crazy weather (ie droughts last year, floods this year) they will hopefully start to work out solutions to the problems, rather than work out why it happened or trying to put it back a few years.

The best way to look at it is that its going to happen at one point or another just because thats the way the Earth works, so we need to work out what we are gonna do to prevent damage to peoples lives or whatever the hells gonna happen..

And yeh I did study this recently so I tend to go off on one when people talk about it.

Not heard that figure before, interesting if true and probably accurate.

Maybe we should go round corking up every animal and volcano?

Yeah just to clarify I meant man-made global warming which is apparently caused by CO2. And they seem to prefer calling it climate change nowadays so they can moan when it gets colder too Rolling Eyes

Haven't some scientists actually proven than CO2 has nothing to do with the greenhouse effect anyway?

It's definately warming, but when all is said and done, we are still in a geological ICE AGE! For these to end, it does generally tend to get warmer.

Though they do tend to go on for millions of years so the current interglacial is expected to end and it will get colder again in another 10,000 or so.

personally i think we didnt have much to do with global warming.

our sun is getting quite old, and as a star nears the end of its life it gets hotter.... i think.

Our sun is approximately 4.5 billion years old and quite young by astronomical standards, it will apparently enter it's really hot phase in about 7 billion years time Wikipedia

Though it's not really hot, just big. A chunk of the sun the same size as us would put out far less heat than us. Hence why sci fi stories about creating small suns here on the surface for the purpose of creating energy are bollocks.

The earth is just going around in it's natural cycle. look at the Grand Canyon. That's global warming for you when the ice caps melted once before. No one asks what caused the polar caps to form all those years ago. just think of that poor dinosaur when the caps formed. I bet he got told off for farting too much then! The earth evolves n its own and doesn't care who is living on it at the time because something else will evolve to be top dog again.
I would say though that we are making the planet untidy and we need a better way of cleaning our mess up, but it is more of a teenagers untidy bedroom rather than the end of the planet.

The most obvious clue that the current fad for 'proving' climate change with recent extreme weather is in each and every news broadcast; namely comments such as "it's the heaviest rain since 19XX" or "..the hottest summer on record since 19**", and so on. The implication is - of course - that the weather could be just as shit and extreme last century as it is now - and thus hasn't change much at all.

Hi

Even more noticeable is when some local bod comes out and claims it is the hottest day since records began. And failing to point out the local records they refer to go back 20 years.

All the best
