Buy more RAM. Aside from that, it's obviously going to run faster if you disable the fancy Aero graphics. And I've heard you can disable some of the search features for a slight boost in overall speed.

But the Aero graphics are droolworthy, why would you wanna turn that off?

Since using Vista, XP looks like playschool designs.

You know that bar you get on the desktop that you can put gadgets on? Turn that off I found mine was using over 25% of my ram at one point.

GF has vista on a new laptop. Rather worried that it's been installed on a 1GB RAM machine. It's using 800mb+ just to do nothing. Confused

When i say "nothing" i mean "crash" and "stumble".

Whats the point in having a 1GB of RAM and expecting it to use less than half? False Economy.

Vista = Fairy Economy. Laughing

I haven't had Vista crash yet.

How many people slagging it off actually use it as their primary OS and are not basing it on "talk".

It's far quicker, more stable and prettier than XP.

Ubuntu is a c*nt, I can't get it off my Laptop without having to back up everything on XP then uninstalling ubuntu taking everything with it...

The fact is that XP runs at ~250MB doing the same things.

I can easily add aother 500MB on to that by looking at a thread full of pics, with itunes on, msn running, outlook, word & AV.

Doing more than browsing the web sends her laptop hunting for the pagefile.

Or it could be because it's got AOL on it . . . . Rolling Eyes

Quicker? Maybe with twice the processor and 4 times the RAM! More stable? Nah, maybe the equally as bad at best? Prettier? And? Do you use choose one hammer over another because of its looks? The OS is just something to run the real apps.

Ever tried uninstalling any version of windows by doing anything short of formatting the drive it is on ?

Can't you do something along the lines of convert your data into a dvd image, burn it onto a dvd, checksum it against the original then delete away to your hearts content?

I run vista on the laptop (Clean OEM install+drivers and apps, the lappy was originally XP), XP on the gaming rig.

Vista is innately more secure than XP and I've never had any troubles with stability from it at all.

On the flipside, even with its mac style app caching vista is just too resource hungry to keep up with XP for speed, and as a side effect, the amount of disk space a vista install can chew through is shocking. Makes it a real pain when doing system backups.

It has its quirks and bugs, but I like it all the same, just I still wouldn't consider playing games on it yet.

My Vista runs fine as standard.

3.4ghz P4 /w HT
3gb RAM

Mine hasn't crashed and I think it is far superior to XP

Tried any networking yet? That has killed vista for me many times. Or have you asked the explorer to do multiple things at once? Such as transferring files while opening other files.

But apart from the explorer issues I'm finding, its a fairly good system. If looks better than xp and is a hell of a lot smoother I find. Plus menu systems are better. Most the people I know who slag off vista are yet to use it. Funnily enough they were the same people who used to slag off xp back in the day, bet you can't guess what they all run now?

Perhaps I have no problem with Vista cause I have a decent computer?

As for the "Do you use choose one hammer over another because of its looks? The OS is just something to run the real apps." comment, I only have this to say.

I don't look at a hammer whilst I am using it, considering my eyes are staring at the GUI whenever I am using the computer, I don't exactly want it to look ugly. Wink

I think the common theme here is Vista and RAM. You need 2GB at least by the looks of it. I'm running Vista and can't fault it. Not that different from XP really, looks a bit better though. Runs all games fine as well. Does seem a bit quicker and smoother.

Bingo! If we remember back to the hazy days of 2001 when XP was released, most people thought 256MB of RAM was a lot and then complained that it ran dog slow. Few years on it was generally accepted that you need at least 512MB RAM for it to run at least smoothly and 1GB if you wanted it to run well. It's the same situation here. 512MB is quoted for minimum, but you might as well not bother. 1GB and you will get OK performance, but not the best, 2GB is where it's at. Anymore and it's pretty much overkill.

Besides with 2GB of RAM under £50 nowadays, it's not that expensive.
