Planning on getting a bike in september, got around £7000 in the bank, looking to spend £3000 and around £1000 for insurance. I can of course go a bit over my budget if neccessary but i'd rather not spend all my money.

so far i have found a few bikes.

a 2001 Cbr600F insurance is £980
a 2002 Gxsr600 insurance is £1000
1999 Yamaha R6 Insurance is £1150

all of them are for roughly the same price.

i will also have to restrict the bike to 33bhp since im not 21 yet, i have looked around for 400cc bikes but most of the ones i have seen are either imports or in poor condition and cost just as much to insure as a bigger bike and the price of the bikes arnt that different either.

any other suggestions would be helpful

Hi there damz eh i was just wandering mate , were did you get your quotes from and how old are you , do you have any NCB years ? i am saving up to get an r6 but i don't know if i want to go for a 1999 I've been told the 2nd gear problem appears more in the older models and that i should stick to 2001 models and on . I don't know though man i like the 1999 look and 2002 but money for me is a big issue , insurance on an R6 2002 model from bennetts Fully Comp is under 1K mate , thanks, kaz

P.S I think it would be a good idea to do my CBT Thumbs Up lol , but my parents want me to get my car test out the way so atleast i can save for a bike as my car will be given to me .

Im using HR insurance for my qoutes, bennetts quotes are usually 2 or 3 hundred more than hr, also ive heard a lot of bad things about bennetts.

Im 19 (20 in 6 days) have 0 ncb and have my bike test in 3 weeks.

The R6 guy has said £2200 for the bike and has 17,000 miles

The cbr is for £2700 has 11,000 miles

gsxr is for £2500 has 20,000 miles

I will most likely only use the bike for commuting, i know a commuter bike would be more practical but if i wanted practical i'd stick with my corsa.

All the bikes seem to be in gd condition (at least in the photo's) and the gsxr has just got its mot done this week.

bennets quote for the r6 is at ...£3300, roughly 1.5 times more than the bike, the cbr is at £1300 and i dont even want to guess what the gsxr will be.

One of my friends is trying to convince me not to get any of these bikes simply because there from a person rather than a dealership, granted you get a warrenty but you pay a hell of a lot more than a private sales.

Ive only had experiance buying a car, which i got from a dealership.... arnold clark where warrenties cover absolutely nothing at all and cost an extra £1000 compared to buying it privately so im a bit wary about getting free warrenties from dealerships.

any advice on what i should do?

neither me or my friend are very mechanically minded when it comes to bikes so im a bit afraid of buying a lemon.
