I'd just came home from a ride, and I sprayed some chain lube on the chain. The next day the bike was making a weird noise when i let off the gas. Like some clicking noise. I kind of thought i'd fix it later. Then the day after it was much worse, so i went home to check and found that the chain is really slack, and when I roll the bike back and forth it kind of moves around... it's like there was 3 inches too much of chain!
What happened?

So its an rs125?

when was the chain last replaced? (as in miles)

is there anyway you can lift up the rear, spin the rear wheel and check for tight/ loose spots?


Sounds like it could be new chain and sprockets time.

Chain and sprockets have never been replaced. I'm about 1500km away from the 12000km service

Get her up on a paddock stand and rotate the back wheel by hand - see if you can find any stiff links and if possible check the front sprocket to see if the teeth have gone to a hook shape.

A broken chain can be very nasty so it's worth looking after it.

it shouldnt really be the C@S then but it depends how old the bike is and how well it has been kept.

however 3 inches of extra slack it definately needs adjusting and you probably shouldnt be riding it until its adjusted.

As for the noise, it could be the sprockets have worn excessively. Get the front sprocket cover off and have a look at the sprocket. (located on the left hand side at the rear of the engine casing.)


check for excessive wear, there should be a nice complete U shape between teeth. give it a good clean while your in there.

you could always get someone to push the bike along slowly and see if the chain drops or rises in certain spots. You will be able to see stiff links this way too.

You really won't be able to do anything without one and the cost of the stand will pay for itself with the saving on garage bills Wink

I might actually buy one of those, cause I can use it for a bigger bike too. How long do you reckon shipping to spain would cost?

Should be able to source them in Spain.

Do you not look at the chain and tighten it up between services then ????
Even on the side stand you should be able to adjust it. If not get a friend to hold bike while you adjust the chain.

Yeah the sprocket is on the right hand side. As is the chain, obviously.
The exhaust is then of course on the left, but the bike also leans to the left. I just don't understand..maybe they designed it in a mirror?

Well primarily it's the same bike as the RS50... but everything is on the wrong side!

One idea from my mate was that it's to stop people putting 125 engines in 50 frames, not sure why though.

Think it`s more to do with the engine being made by Rotax

The sprocket is reversed, compared to accepted jap-bike trad

It would loose speed, but honestly, you shouldn't ride it with a loose chain, you'll end up busting it in two.

Walk it to a garage, tell them you need a new chain & sprockets. They should take care of you if they are good.

Plenty of people will sell decent chains and sprockets. No need to stick with Aprilia parts.

When you lubed the chain, did you do all of it or just the bits visable? How often do you adjust the chain?

I've never adjusted the chain.
My girlfriend sprayed the whole chain while I rolled the bike.

To be honest I would expect it to have needed adjusting in ~2000km. However you also have no idea how it has been treated in the past.
