Hard drive problems

Hi,
Ive got a second hard drive that i use to store all my files on, recently it has started making noises and now my computer automatically runs checkdisk on it just after start up. When it eventually reaches the xp screen the drive is not shown in my computer. Ive got loads of important stuff on there and really dont want to lose it all. Does anyone know what this may be and how i can possibly fix it??

Is the hard drive IDE?
Does it detect it in Bios?

Sounds that the drive could be corrupt of the cable is not connected correctly. Open the box and check the cables going to the drive.

Is it clicking noises? If so, the chances are that the drive is buggered. As Stevie says, check the cables but I think you'll find that its toast.

Yes it is IDE, Not sure if it finds it in BIOS it doesnt show it on my computer. it does make some strange noises though! The cable is definitely in correctly. If it is screwed is there companys that can recover the data?? Thanks

I know its no use to you now but I have 3HD's. Two external ones one(250GB) for all my files as in downloaded music, films pictures and programs and the other one (750Gb) is just for a back up of the first plus a back up of my PC's HD.

Better safe than sorry. Wink

That does sound like a good idea, there must be a more reliable type of drive to do a backup to! Its a real pain as there are lots of things on their i need such as CV's, Past Holiday photos etc all gone unless i can get it working again, or if anyone know of data recovery place that can help??? Enter bios and there should be an option which will show you the hard dirves connected to your computer.

Its just started working again so im frantically copying everything over at the moment, ive just ordered a external 500gb hard drive to back everything up and a new internal one for my files. Is there any programs that will automatically backup this external drive with everything i have automatically say once a week etc??? Thanks

does what you ask... and their are cheaper ways of getting the program, but it's worth paying for.

Clunking and grinding noises under initial power up or when being accessed means time to get the data off..
Agreed the best is ghost to cloan..
I hear the version that is in Hirens Cd works well along with the other utilities it is bundled with.. Not that i condone piracy but someone mentioned it was available (v 9.2 latest) by torrent .. Wink
