Hi folks,

I bought a Cat-D SV650 2004 with <10k miles on it recently, and was about to go out for my second spin on it today when I noticed something odd...

Alas, I have no picture (yet)... The front sprocket has only one tooth.

F**k knows how the other 14 had snapped off about 1/4 of the way up, but only one of them was intact! They hadn't worn down - they were actually snapped, sharp and clean.

The amazing thing is that it actually wasn't that noticeable Shocked I put a brand new chain and sprocket set on and the clutchless gear change was smoother and shifting down was quieter but it wasn't that different. It felt a bit more shifty too.

The chain could literally be pulled by your fingers about 2cm off the sprocket - I should have checked it more thoroughly really, and should have prioritised installation of the new one higher!

good find dude.

My only suggestion is that the sprocket hamsters hadn't been fed any chain lube for a while and started knawing on metal as their only source of nutrition.

Or maybe that a rear-wheel lock at high speed could have caused said damage.

Of course another explanation is that it's a baby sproket and all its teeth haven't grown yet.

*gets coat*

Perhaps you should tell people the brand of this miracle sprocket. Or it could be a dangerously unsafe sprocket. Your choice. Laughing

I'm not sure what brand it was but it had two very large rubber washer things - reminding me somewhat of a cushdrive system - attatched to it.

I'll try and scan it at some point to show you.

I could imagine that once one tooth had snapped the others would follow suit very quickly - in a chain reaction type effect.

Funny that the rear doesn't look that bad.

Perhaps the previous owner was never able to remove the front sprocket (it is 145nM tightened) so he never bothered? Laughing

That'll be a genuine Suzuki one, the rubber dampers absorb a degree of shock and a lot of noise.
