I'm removing the existing wheel bearings in my rear wheel and have a question. I've got a pull hammer and was wondering if the existing bearings are meant to come out easily?...

I've been bashing the hell out of it and the claw thing stays in the bearings for a while but eventually slips out.... Is this usual or am i doing something wrong? Surely they shouldn't be in there this tight?

Cheers

Just use a drift its easier.

A drift is usually a thinish shaft of steel or brass used in this instance to remove bearings. This is the method i use to remove wheel bearings. When drifting the bearing support the underside of the wheel on a block of wood or a surface that wont damage the discs or hub.tim Thumbs Up

Slide hammer is just the tool for the job *sulks, stinkwheel wants a slide hammer*. As said, make sure you've removed any circlips.

Some of them only come out from one side and have a 'lip' on the other side..

I have a slide hammer and in my experience they are crap for wheel bearings. One of the problems is they cannot get a decent grip on the blind side of the bearing as there's normally no chamfer on the spacer.

Take it to a machine shop and get one of their guys to run an arc welder up the inside of the rim.

The remains of the bearing will melt off leaving you free to attack it again with a new one.

Weld a piece of mild steel from one side of the outer race to the other forming a bridge and smack it out.
