Ok. The maybe a long story, not sure yet so i'll just keep typing until i've gotten everything sorted Smile

I bought my motorbike (Suzuki RV125 Van Van) Brand New back in January '07, I insure my bike while I was in the motorbike showroom, the total price of TPFT came to £182.

Now 6 months later in June my bike got stolen. Roughly 1 week onwards from the bike being stolen it was found(Smashed up to smitherines I might add) 2 weeks later an NIG Insurance Engineer came out to look at the condition of the bike, and decided it was going to be scrapped.

I've had a cheque given to me to refund my losses considering the bike has been scrapped.

But i'm curious, considering i've only had 6 months of use out of my insurance, is there any chance I could get a refund back off my insurance from the remaining 6 months I would of had if the bike was never stolen.

Or would they be expecting me to insure my next motorbike(GSF600 sitting in the garage) with NIG where I could just upgrade my old remainders of the previous insurance onto the new bike and give me a slight discount to the value of the 6 months?

Some insurers cancel the rest of the policy when a total loss claim is paid out on the grounds there is no longer the vehicle to insure.

As for the refund, you having a laugh? They have fufilled their obligation in full.

IF you are lucky and they feel nice they may allow you to do a change of bike on the policy.

I was just curious.

At first I thought the same, they have fully refunded my losses, therefor the insurance is now cancled as technicaly there is no bike anymore.

But then I thought "What if, if I can get £60 back that can go towards my next insurance"

I've already checked the insurance qoute with NIG for my GSF600, it's much more then the other insurance qoutes I got from AXA and Bennets. So looks like i'll just leave it and go with a cheaper insurance company.

Generally speaking once an insurance company has paid out on a policy for a total loss claim then the policy ceases to exist as that is the end of the contract.

I'm getting half of mine back, because it was a total loss as a result of an accident which wasn't my fault. Not really that fair from the customers' point of view - the fact your bike was nicked was as much your fault as my crash was my fault.
