My GPX750R is in dire need of a new rear shock.

Now a new hagon costs about as much as the bike is worth, and seeing as they only made the bike for 3 years there aren't a lot of decent used ones around.

So does anyone know if a shock from another bike will fit and do the job? I was thinking of something like a hagon shock for a zzr600, a few of those pop up on ebay.

Hi

Suspect a ZXR750 one would be a closer match, but think you will struggle.

I can measure up a ZZR600 E model one if you want.

Has the shock lost all damping? Can it be rebuilt. Or has someone blown the air preload through the roof using a garage air line.

All the best

Keith

Like Keith says, trying finding a local suspension specialist and get a quote first.

The shock is 75000 miles old, and hasn't been cared for too well. Last time I touched it the big sticker came away in my hand, with a large amount of mushy rust stuck to the back of it.

It has some damping left, but very little. I can push the back end of the bike down 2 or 3 inches by hand and hold it there, when I let the pressure off it rises slowly.

I may just get a used shock off of LM spares, they offer a guarantee if its knackered.

That sounds more like the spring than the damping. Try pumping up the air pressure in the shock (there is a tyre type valve on one side to pump it up with).

All the best

Ah yes, its not holding any air pressure either, and seems to hiss a bit when I bounce the back.

However, your hunch of a ZXR750 rear shock is looking tempting. More or less consecutive part numbers from most of the aftermarket, and the linkage looks identical.

I think one can be persuaded to fit.

Hi

As they use air as a major part of the springing, sounds like your is well and truely shot.

The ZXR750 was originally derived from the GPX750 (engine is very similar, except for the head). Not sure how many other bits are close enough to swap over.

All the best

New OE?

Are you quite insane?

I'm going to get a ZXR750 shock with its linkage off of ebay. Lots of bits to persuade it all together there.

Then if the shock gives up on me, lots of ZXR750 shocks on ebay.

Might get rid of the feeling of impending death at above the ton now.

Its a GPx750. They were well known for feelings of impending death. Normally when accelerating over bumps with the bars flapping madly.

All the best

I know, I'm trying to reduce the death feeling. I have an old kawasaki steering damper at my parents' house that will be fitted when I remember to grab it.

I've heard quite the opposite.

Hagon are certainly well recommended by the Fazer Owner Club (Unofficial), and the FJ & FJR Owners club.

Indeed.

I'm looking forward to threads like "A set of filters costs how much?"

Honda VFR Club disagrees: ( https://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/showpost.php?p=865734&postcount=18 )

Cheap as fook from David Silver.

I've done loads of servicing on the bike and bought loads of parts, the only thing I find expensive are the fairing trim clips, everything else is priced well well below what I was paying for my Suzuki from Robinsons Foundry

Nosecone - £210, Fairing Lower - £170, Oil Filter - £7.50, Air Filter - £20

Everyone has bad experiences with every manufacturer.

Ohlins:
https://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/honda-tech/shock-africa-twin-8770#post39865

and from the thread you quoted:

https://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/showpost.php?p=866923&postcount=27

which you conveniently seem to have overlooked..

Quote:
I phoned Hagon today and told them about what I had read about their shocks. They agreed that a few weeks ago they took delivery of some hard chromed and ground damper rods which were sub-standard. These were fitted to some monoshocks and they caused premature seal failure due to the ground surface not upto standard. When customers reported problems with leaking dampers they ask for the faulty shocks back and duly replaced the faulty components.

Hagon are very confident this problem is now solved, they also told me that they have improved the wiper seals fitted to their shocks because this was identified as a problem area especially on bikes not fitted with a hugger and dirt was building up on the damper rod. The fellow I spoke to had worked at Hagon for many years and when I asked him about spring problems, he told me he could only remember about 3 instances and these were caused by the pre-load being set out of the tolerance of the spring.

What I liked about Hagons replies to my questions was their total honesty about the problems they have had. They told me that the shock I have carries a 2yr unconditional warranty and if any of their shocks fail in that time
caused by component failure, they are only to happy to replace the shock or give the customer a full refund.

It was pointed out to me that some customers give inaccurate information about the total weight that the shock as to support, consiquently the spring is out of its total load range and cannot operate correctly. To compensate for this some owners over adjust the pre-load which stresses the spring and adds to more problems.

I am satisfied with their explanations, and intend to monitor my shock and see what happens.

Dave

Not really I can supply new in the box rear shocks for the VFR800FW/X for around £160 dependant on stock.

Its possible to get many OEM shocks very cheaply.
