DVD playing problems XP

I bought a pretty much brand new laptop.
It only has Xp Pro on it and few other applications so far.
When i put a DVD in the drive, windows media comes up with an error saying you should try changing the colour settings or some crap!?
I've never seen this before, it simply wont play it and there isnt really a reason for it in my mind.

Any help?

Right click on the desktop, select properties.

Once you get the display properties box up, click the settings tab.

Under the picture of the monitor you'll have a line that hopefully reads something like:

<Your laptop's panel here> on <Your laptop's graphics card here>

If thats the case, set the color quality on the bottom right to highest (32bit) and you should be ok.

If it simply says:

on

Under the pic of the monitor, your missing graphics card drivers, if thats the case, whats the make and exact model of the laptop? I'll point you to the drivers you'll need.

I've changed the settings but with no joy, before i posted this.

I will check what the graphics etc are later and post.

Ha the same prob with a laptop after xp pro install.
It had home on it before and worked no prob.

I just installed a 3rd party dvd player on it and it worked like a charm.

I do vaguely remember there was a plug in or such for it to make it work but figured it was just as easy to install other software.
Think it was hard to track down the plug in anyway.

Since I'm not a fan of MS media player anyway and use winamp for music it didnt bother me much.

Good point, XP home and pro tend not to come with DVD playback codecs if your installing from scratch, grab a copy of powerdvd or the like and try with that.
