Thought i would share this news as i am so happy!!
I thought i would have to sell my bike as i am in the throws of relocating somewhere hot, sandy and full of Arabs...but a mate has offered to store my beloved Hornet for the 2 yrs i am going for.
Everyone has told me to just get rid, but its a project bike now and i am made up!

I am going to put her on a paddock stand and increase the pressure in the front tyre. Toying with the idea of taking the battery off. and she will be chained and alarmed in a brick garage.
So, see you in a couple of years when the dust covers come off and she gets a good service..... Very Happy

Remember what it says in the manual..

Drain the petrol etc, not sure about oil / water.

Drain the fluids and grease up everything in sight. Might be worth getting a front paddock stand and deflating the tyres, not overinflating them.

Find yourself some cheap TPFT insurance too - 2 years of no claims comes in handy...

If you are going to store it for two years then definitely remove the battery. Follow the other advice too about draining the fluids and try to get the front wheel off the floor too.

Personally I think that you should sell it. There is little point in having a bike in storage for two years as all it will do in that time is deteriorate and depreciate. You would be much better off selling it, putting the money to one side and then in two years buying something else with that cash. The cash can only accumulate a bit of interest and go up in value whereas the bike will only depreciate.

I know it can be hard to get rid of something you are attached to but I really think that selling up would be for the best. If you do sell and in two years time when you are buying something else, something 'new' you will realise that what you did was for the best.

If leaving a bike for a long period a couple of tricks I was told...

Arrow Take the brake pads out and make sure you apply oil and/or grease to the brakes. Then wrap in cling film. Obviously clean and replace before riding.

Arrow Also soak a rag in clean oil and stuff it up the (cold) exhaust and again apply cling film. Stops condensation forming inside and rotting it.

Also remember to SORN it and get someone to renew it (or do it online) after the first year or you may come back to a fine Rolling Eyes

One think about any bike that's left standing is the do deteriorate. The rubber bits harden and become brittle. The electrics seem to just rot.

I saw a while ago there was a regular advert in MCN for one of the bags that ou put the bike in and then seal. Something like that maybe a good investment.

M and P sell those bags...

Put oil down the cylinders as well to stop them rusting.

If it was me I'd completely fill the engine with oil (But make sure to remove it before running it again!) but I'm not sure how safe that is to do.

As a theory it sounds good but I'm sure it would create some practical problems and possibly wouldn't be that wise a thing to do. Besides you'd need quite a bit of oil I would have thought to fill an engine completely.

I wouldn't worry too much as the engine will survive for a couple of years without any major problems as long as it is stored away from the harsh weather and in particular kept in dry conditions. Thumbs Up

Wash it
Dry it
Drain the fuel tank and carbs.
Refill with something that won't evaporate leaving gungy deposits (meths?).
Change the engine oil and filter, overfill the oil to fill the crankcase but no further - it'll just drible out of the breather.
Spray some light oil (WD40 or similar) down the exhaust, and stuff an oil rag up it.
Take out the spark plugs, Squirt some oil down the bores, Copperslip the threads and then put the plugs back in - No need to do them up tight though.
Pop it up on a couple of paddock stands.
Remove the battery.
Pop it in a vac bag with several half kilo sacks of dessicant (silica gel), and a list inside the bag of everything you did so you can undo it all again.

Come back to the bike in two years, and find it still a pig to start and won't run right. Bikes don't like being stored.

Still, better sort out your Hornet huh. Wouldn't want it to not start when you <snigger> get back.

Actually feck-tard, I am for the troops...

I think you'll find it's their shitty criminal leaders who have no respect for them. Why else would they be telling soldiers DU is good for them?

I just thought that if I was in his predicament the last thing I'd be worrying about was my bike.

My scooter (2-stroke aircooled though, so no crank oil or water to worry about) sat in a damp garage for three years and fired up first time when I got her. Just drain the petrol, oil and water and cover it with a tarp or something and you'll be fine.

Spray everything including all nooks and crannies on the bike with a very generous amount of FS365 or WD40, and cover it a large cotton sheet underneath a bike cover. It will look horrible 2 years later, but will be gleaming after a good wash. The cotton sheet soaks up any condensation on the bike, and helps prevent it rusting. Some old bikes occasionally rust on the inside of the petrol tank, because of moisture in the air inside the empty tank condensing in winter. It might be worth removing the tank and swirling a small amount of oil around to coat the inside. Remember to wash it out before using it though. Removing the battery is a good idea.

WHOA it is hot out here!

Thanks for all the good advice guys....have done many of the suggested things...just need to get another paddock stand when i am back in the UK in Jan...she is being well looked after.. currently front wheel being regularly rotated as she is on one stand at the mo....the battery is off and will be trickle charged every so often but new ones are not that expensive...if parts start to go bad...at least its a project for me to come back to...as for depreciation...well
she isnt worth all that much to be honest....the same old story as with cars. Worth more to the owner than to sell...

gonna miss not riding, having been reunited (on 4 wheels) with the roads in Dubai i MOST DEFINATELY wont be getting a bike here...they are nutters!
cheers again
