The end of horror movies?

They do make some awful cliché horror movies & there hasn't been one decent horror film in years.
Actually went through a stage of using the same story line for all the movies which was; Evil spirit is in the house, found why the spirit is unhappy & they will stop being evil. This was used in What lies beneath, The Ring, The Grudge, White Noise & a few others.

Not to mention using the same scare tactics like running infront of the camera.

Big budgets & horror movies don't mix, you need a low budget & a good script, Blair Witch, for me is probably the creepiest movie of the past 15 years which actually didn't do all the same tactics most movies do but left it to the viewer.

What do you think? The end for horror movies like it is for teen comedy's?

Horror movies aren't dead, just like no movie genre is dead. What is dead is Hollywood originality.
I'm sure you can still find excellent Asian or European made horror films which will be both scary and original, but if you wait for the big budget Hollywood remakes of these films (always done because they can't come up with ideas themselves) then you will be disappointed....

These days if it's not already been made as a film or written as a comic book the studios seem not to be interested....

been thinking about what I've seen recently that's been good, given that I'm not a huge horror genre fan! Dog Soldiers and The Descent, both by the same directore, were very good. 28 Weeks Later wasn't bad. The Host was good but didn't live up to the expectations set by the first 20mins.

Should also add that it doesn't have to be new to be great and scary! If you want good films dig out some classics that you've not seen before... I saw John Carpenter's The Thing for the first time a few months back, it was great!

Yup, the Asian horror's are pretty decent, i know they make the original The Ring which is better then the remake & they seem to be very imaginative & like to experiment, even if sometimes it is a bit mental!
There seems to be a barrage of horror movies coming out now, i just watched Wrong Turn 2 which is truly awful, then another called Sam's Lake which is low budget but uses all the same tricks with a weak story.

The Original Chainsaw Massacre is a good horror with that gritty 70s look & was something different, but then again, Hollywood got there hands on it & created a number of sequels which didn't stand up to the original. I'm surprised they havn't made a remake of classics like The Evil Dead.

Dog Soldiers was a good film, humour with horror whilst being original. Really enjoyed it.

Don't even mention the new Halloween movie.

Im losing faith in new movies, and I refuse to watch the ridiculous remakes of movies from 20 years ago, whats that about??

Its being propelled by hardcore blinkered idiots. Theres a bloke at work who swears that 'Snakes on a plane' is good because its a classic B movie (what with a massive budget?) when really it was god awful tripe that wasnt fit for 3 AM on sky movies whatever they call them now!

I don't have that channel.

They even made another of Snakes On A Plane called Flight Of The Living Dead, not sure if it's made by the same people but it's the same, but with zombies. Don't think it came out in the cinema but it's kinda fun, much better then Snakes. Isn't scary but being trapped in a plane with zombies is fun to watch.

Really like movies like this as they don't spend millions in advertising & don't take themselves to seriously, whereas Hollywood tries far too hard.

Well it's definitely the better film & again, it shows Hollywood trying to remake the film into there own thing & failing.

Has anyone seen Sunshine? I though this really was a brilliant film, everything was set at the right pace with an interesting story with good characters & then Hollywood hits you with the old bad guy on a ghost ship routine. The film promptly went down hill from there & i wasn't interested in what happened after that.

Sunshine was one of the last Danny Boyle films, he did a remake of Halloween recently which was pretty poor. Sunshine I thought was fantastic at the start, but 2/3rds through it got poor - if you've seen the film you'll know what happens. Much like 28 Weeks Later, his sequel to 28 Days, it was a great beginning and middle, but got poor at the end.

The horror genre isn't dead in Hollywood, they're just not the profitable films at the moment. Genre rings happen all the time. In the 50s everyone said horror was dead, but Hammer Horror came along and reignited the genre. It happens all the time.

Dog Soldiers is a quality film as well, hopefully the sequel will be finished in 2008.

Even though The Host isn't a horror movie, and even though it isnt in English, i think it was better than any Hollywood film out that year. Like someone mentioned, Hollywood originality is just dead.

Most boring advert for a film i have witnessed is the Bourne Ultinaimiun or something? Big fat yawn.

It's not only horror films Hollywood are loosing there touch with.

They're forgetting what an action movie is about, if you're a fan of the early 90s then you'll know that movies like Die Hard, Commando, Predator, Terminator etc are no bullcrap action movies.
Seems like today they have to reach a certain criteria to be an action movie, including squeezing in a love scene. What happened to the one guy taking on the entire Iraqi military? Or taking on the terrorists that kidnapped your daughter with a pitch fork?

White noise is the shittiest film, never mind ending, i have seen tbh.

The best horror films are ones that are not big releases.
