In a half slumber I heard on the radio this morning that 1 in 5 men in the UK know how to get hold of a gun. In my immediate circle, I can only think of one person who might know a friend of a friend who might know someone who could get hold of one. 1 in 5 seems a bit steep to me, unless they count wandering into your local rough pub and asking "Excuse me chaps, but could anyone sell me a firearm?" at the bar, or if you know of someone with a shotgun and can break in at night. Although you'd be a bit dumb breaking into a house where you know they have a shotgun Smile

So, if you are in the UK (we'll exclude the warmongers over in Uncle Sam) can you get hold of a firearm? We'll include sawn off shotguns and other items that have been converted to fire live rounds.

I know a few people with guns, some that are kept properly inlocked cabinets bolted to walls and with licenses, some that are not! I havent got one myself, but could get one if it was needed! One in 5 probably is right around my area. Thumbs Up

Depends who you associate with, say twenty of my good mates for example, there is one who can get hold of and may have some stashed.

We all know each other so that means, its twenty out of twenty who can get hold of a gun.

The statistics are shit, it doesn't mean that in every group of 5 people one can get a shooter, just that for every 5 people in Britain there is one who can get a gun.

For legal reasons this is all lies.

If in the UK I could probably find out where to get one from..but I think 1 in 5 is over inflated...besides how the feck do you research a figure like that. Its purely speculative anyway.

True, but unless all twenty are on BCF, then for the purposes of this selection it still holds.

Which is why there's a now a poll for BCF, to see what the stats here are.

Ahaaaaaa, bloody good point.

But surely if its for BCF and not just the UK as you say, the why exclude americans as you say in your first post?

Is it BCF?

Is it Britain?

Or is it BCF in Britain?

Because you get guns free with cornflakes over there. If I asked an American "do you know how to get a gun?" they'll point me to the nearest Walmart.

Yes, it still counts. If I were to ask you "Could you get me a gun?" and you knew how to obtain one, it wouldn't matter to me where you got it from.

Personally I wouldn't count as a gun anything that's been converted from a non-firer, or most re-activated de-acs. Non-rifled barrels and abysmal reliability (including blowing up in your face) make them more of a liability than a weapon.

So, if you disclude all that kind of crap, the stats of 1-in-5 are rubbish. Getting hold of a 'proper' gun is a lot harder.

Shotguns have always been a piece of p!ss, but they're not a 'proper' gun either.

Just found the news item.

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6988205.stm

It only refers to "an illegal firearm". Then again, I'd like to have seen the questions these people were posed with, as it's clearly aimed at "proving" we need even tighter controls.

For every one real pistol in circulation there are hundreds of mickey-mouse lash-ups, with converted non-firers being the most prevelant. And most of the real pistols are antiques. Your proper modern semi-auto or revolver is a rarity and commands a very high price. The last one I was offered (a S&W 9mm) was up for a grand, which is seriously over the top when I can pop over to Holland and get an Eastern Bloc military 9mm for around £200.

Statistics are rubbish anyway. They may have done a survey asking people if they can get hold of an illegal firearm, but how many of those people actually understand the question, and probably thought oo my mates dad's uncle's got a shotgun, so yes, when infact a shotgun isn't illegal obviously. Also where was the survey conducted? Lozelles? South London? Without asking every single person in the UK you can't give anything like a realistic figure like 1 in 5.

I remember when the local gun smiths got knocked over in Banbury.

Got offered an over and under 12 gauge browning for a 50 quid, damn I wish I had 50 quid at the time Crying or Very sad

Round here you can get a pistol for the price of an eighth of decent bud.

Best thing is they are real guns here no de-ac's reactivated, loads of glocks strangely seem to be real popular with the "gangsta's" they like to call them cop killers Laughing

Hell you don't need a permit to own a pistol but you need one to buy one. So in reality you can be given a gun and its legal to own it. At 18 you can buy rifles and shotguns with no license's. Shit the AK or AR15 may only be semi auto but its still an assualt rifle.

Scary ass state.

I put it to you that that very much depends on the shotgun and what you're firing out of it. There are some very nasty, externally rifled, solid slugs.

In terms of the firearms act, my potato launcher is an illegal firearm. So yes, I could get one, there is one in my living room.

In terms of the spirit of the thread, could I get hold of something you would not feel silly holding up a bank with? Probably yes if I put my mind to it, although it could conceivably take a bit of time to arrange. I reckon given a few tools and some commericially available 'off the shelf' items, I could knock-up a reasonably accurate .22" rimfire that wouldn't blow up in my face.

What's probably more tricky is getting hold of the ammunition, especially with regard to handguns.

For obtaining what is legally permitted, via shotgun/firearm certificates etc. I know what to do, and where to go.

If you wanted one tomorrow, there are lots of country/farmer types around here, most probably have 1 or 2.

So I voted yes.

But then you mentioned the illegal stuff, could probly work it out without too much difficulty, but I dont exactly have a gun dealer on my speed dial.

+1 on all of that!

even tho theres alot of re-activated ones, & may be more dodgy for the user then a fresh non-tampered gun, BUT they more then likely will do the job if needs be

yea i could probs access some sort of firearms....(well considering someone i know VERY well went down for firearms) + im in south london Laughing

but the ammo is the hardest part

Depends really.. I have a mate with an old air rifle that's pretty dam powerful, could injure someone if you wanted it too..

Or my uncle in Scotland owns a series of rifles and pistols cause he hunts a lot. But he would never let me have one, and I live around 650 miles away from him so I'd hardly call it easy access.. but I know he has them.

You'd have more grief trying to get hold of rifled shotgun slugs than a proper pistola probably. Same again for any proper handgun/rifle ammo, it's always been worth more than the gun firing it, pound for pound. Blaggers used to use .410 shotgun cartridges wrapped in tape for their revolvers because proper ammo was unavailable.

Solid shotgun ammo is easily 'modified' from standard cartridges. All you need is some lead and a mould to make the slugs. Cut off the top of a cartridge, take the shot out, replace it with your slug and tape over the top.

Taking half the shot out, pressing the rest into a lump of blu-tak then replacing it in the cartridge makes a nasty mess of whatever you hit with it. Mate of mine hit a rabbit with such a projectile at about 20 yards and there was very little left of it, just a few scraps of fur.
