The drain outside in my yard has become blocked solid - no water is going through whatsoever and it's just backing up and turning the yard into a greasy swimming pool (takeaway downstairs).

How do I clean it? We've tried caustic soda with no result, is there any magic solution that you know of?

The blockage is further back than just the entrance to the drain - have tried sticking a longish rod down and nothing came out.

There's an art to rodding drains, I am useless at it but the OH is quite good. You can't just stick a rod down there, you need usually to be further up or down the "line" from the blockage and you need to have clean water running in whilst you are doing it. Have a look round the yard and see if your drain system has some sort of proper rodding point, they are usually quite small and round or oval in shape, like a mini manhole cover. If you can get your rods in there and give them a good scoosh you should be able to shift anything that is blocking it but when you say "a good length" of rod don't forget that rods screw together to a length of over 30 feet for a reason!

As above, if done right rodding will do the trick better than anything else. Also try to lift other covers to find where the blockage is. The closer you can get to rod it the better.

Daft question.. But if you are talking about your regular drains, the one's that the waste pipes from the kitchen sink etc go into.... Do you have pebble-dash/sparred walls? I found that all the gravel bits get stuck at the bottom, blocking mine :S

Jet washers often do the trick, if you or a neighbour have one?

Thumbs Up

Take away downstairs? , sounds like the lazy approach to getting rid of fat, ie they chuck it down the drain , you need a HOT lance to get rid of that stuff like picadilly circus drains, thing is if YOU melt it , it just resolidifies down pipe and causes the same problem again

Depending on where the blockage is, your water company could be responsible for it.

here is something I recall from my catering days

Tons of bicarb of soda , since that stuff sort of lifts fat , chuck it down the drain then cram in ALOT of boiling water, the soda lifts the fat, the water melts it , it will of course reharden down the road ...
