hi guys hope some one can help? got 1999 rs 125 bought it a couple of weeks ago, it is ment to be the full power, when i hit 8000rpms she pulls like mad, but i can't get passed 80, i've read on the net i should be going pass this but i'm at a lost on this so any ideas? thats the first prob

This is the second prob, was riding to work last week, doing about 70 when she seized, felt like when she runs out of fuel, dropped the clucth and stopped. Tried to restart but just coughed and splutted. striped the engine down and piston is undamaged and still moving freely and is oiled. But before i striped it i put it second and would not turn, when i striped it i pushed the piston and it slid down, so i put it in second and it moved back up. Found the powervalve was upside down and corrected it and cleaned, also i found that the cable had snapped, head gasket was burnt on one side.

So what happened??? Any help on any of these would be greatly appeciated

Hi

They should easily manage more than 80 derestricted, but they are also geared for about 10mph per 1000rpm, so 80mph is around 8000rpm, just before the power valve opens when there is a bit of a delay in the power delivery. Quite easy for it not to pull through this if you just sit in top and hope to accelerate.

Not sure about the seizing. But the RS doesn't have a head gasket as such, just a couple of large rubber O rings.

All the best

Keith

I'd guess it just clipped the powervalve, if the piston and barrel are undamaged you've just been lucky! As Kickstart says, it doesn't have a head gasket it has a rubber o ring, so I'm guessing your thinking of the base gaskets?

As for why it's not getting past 80mph, could be several reasons, such as you not having it jetted correctly or it could have the mixture messed up with too much oil or it could have low compression (which could be caused by many things such as worn rings or seals ect). Most likely however, I'd say your speed is being hampered by your having the powervalve the wrong way up.

Thanks for the replys, i've now rebuilt the bike but the problem is that i can't seem to get it started. I've checked the following, spark plug(new), compression, it seems to be getting fuel. Back fired a couple of times. It starts to race and seems like she is going to start but then slows. Any ideas??

The engine is a type 122, does this one have a timing setting on it? and how do you adjust it? cheers for the reply. The Haynes manual talks about timing on the 123 but says nothin about timing on the 122. Totaly lost by the book.

Hi

No legitimate way of adjusting the timing on the 122 engine, although you can buy a cdi which can be reprogrammed with a different advance curve.

All the best

Spoke to a mechanic today from a Aprilia dealer, told him the problem, he told me it's only two things now, first one is the main bearings have gone, and the second is that the woodruff key is either snapped or bent. Told me to have a look at the fly wheel to see if there was any movement if not , it would be the woodruff key. Can't look at the key at the moment, fly wheel nut won't play with me. Does all this sound right? Many thanks once again

Hi

Main bearingss normally whine when they have gone. Also tend to take the seals out rapidly which is likely to result in a high idle speed which you cannot adjust down (ignition side) or using gearbox oil (clutch side). Can feel for play in the ignition side one by holding the flywheel and trying to feel for up / down play.

Woodruff key shearing off can happen. Check the ignition timing. Woodruff key is there to locate the flywheel on the crank. Easy to replace and cost peanuts.

All the best

Keith

Hi

You can run the engine with the flywheel cover off. Nothing to prevent you from setting the engine to TDC and putting some marks on the flywheel that you can check with a strobe light.

All the best
