Im thinking about getting a shaft driven bike for my next one, does there exist an affordable and crucially desirable shaft drive bike, barring the obvious Rocket III and all the beemers (neither of which i could hope to afford!)

it crossed my mind on the way to work this morning that a shaft drive bike would serve me well in winter, but i just cant think of one that i would want!

Anyone know any different?

Cheers

Sam

As i've said before numerous times, once you have had a shaft drive bike its very difficult to go back to chain.. (i'd definitely be manufactureing some sort of bastardised scott oiler if i did though)

My mate has a 650 deauville, T reg and drives from Milton Keynes to work in London and back each day.

He swears by it. Not too much chrome so it still looks good without shedloads of work. It's a v twin, handles OK and is cheap!!

I had a 900 Divvy. Fast enough and handles OK and is an in line four. Not a bad bike but suffered from Yamaha's not quite so good quality. Went ok though!

I was looking into fitting a GSX1100G shaft unit onto my GSXR1100.

They sound meaty as fuck as well, I had one engine braking down the gears next to an MPV once and the kid in the back started covering his ears and crying

Fantastic to lob around twisties as well, fuck sportsbikes, never had so much fun as when I was lobbing that absolute fucking boat of a bike around like a hooligan.

What about just getting a scot oiler for a chain bike?
From what I remember, you still have to change the shaft oil every 4000 miles (on my old beemer) or something - a scot oiler with a big tank shouldn't be too far off this I think and the chain /should/ last for ages.

4K? , are you kidding? , I think the Haynes says 20K, but I left mine in for 27K it came out still golden and not even slightly dark, the engine oil though goes black dead quick.

To shaft or not: that is the question
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
the pain of lube and chain re-tension
or to take the easier option of less maintenance

FWIW shaft, ok for all round bike, commuter and tourer.
BMW seems to make a good sporty K1200 as well Thumbs Up
