 |
|
ok kids i have a couple of ht caps here 1 of which i was going to use,
bear in mind these are 2nd hand caps,
but i thought i'd test the coils i was unscrewing them from while i was at it,
1 tested out ok at 26kohm but the other coil tested out at 1.85Mohm
now thats quite a difference,
no worries i thought, they are just spare coils i had lying about,
any way unscrewed the ht caps and thought i'd just pop my meter either side of it,
and 1 cap i got a resistance of 10.9 kohm
and the 2nd had a resistance of 1.87Mohms
so any way i know the second cap is fuct,
but why does the first one even have a resistance?? ____________________ the humans are dead

ok jamie, just cause im a nice guy
ok you know that a coil is essentially just a transformer
https://www.drivelineblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/transformer-srt10.jpg
no not one of those, one of these
https://lakewoodconferences.com/direct/dbimage/50188629/Power_Transformer.jpg
and it changes you measly 12v to a mighty 30000 volts (approx)
well for a transformer to work it has 2 sets of windings (copper wire)
the primary winding and the secondary winding, the primary winding being the supply side and the secondary being the spark plug side,
heres what a coil circuit looks like
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/coil.jpg
ok sweet, now you have 2 plugs on each coil.
1 at the beguining of the primary coil and one between the end of the primary coil and secondary coil.
to test the primary winding, switch your meter to "ohms"
and place each lead to each terminal,
you should have a resistance of between 3 and 5 ohms (coils can differ)
to measure your secondary winding,
remove the ht cap (because we now know it has a resistor to supress noise) and stick one probe in the end of the ht lead and the other on the second terminal ,
we should get a reading of about 13.5kohm (13500 ohms)
it won't matter too much what terminal you put the probe on because whats 5ohms when we are measuring 13500 ohms
and thats it, if you get crazy results then you know you coil is buggered
thats thats the end of todays lesson
tomorrow we'll be talking about the Spanish inquisition ____________________ the humans are dead

You'll have one of: resistive plugs, caps or ht leads for RFI suppression.
Use all three together to suppress RFI to the point where you get no spark at all. Use none for a great spark and messing up everybody's tv sets.

Non resistor plugs are easy. Same code number, without the R.
So B8HS would be non resistor, BR8HS would be the same plug with a resistor.
Too much resistance kills your points too, eats away at the electrodes. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

A lot of bikes have to use resistor plugs to stop the RF interference scrambling the various black boxes. There is no real need for them on points ignition bikes.
Try riding a 350YPVS with the powervalve controller chattering the exhaust valve open and closed at random intervals though! "Hmm. Ok, we'll put the resistor plugs back in then shall we." ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen.
