Not looked at my chain for 2 weeks now. Just given it a clean and noticed that the little black clip which secures the split link is... well isnt there...
In the last two weeks I've done probably 300-400 miles and in excess of 140mph on a few occasions

my mate ('V4' on here) also had the same issue.... except he was running a split link on a TL1000R. He lost his chain 4 miles from home and walked it back! nutter. ____________________ Current : '08 Yamaha FZ1s

Some O-ring chains have sufficient clearance to put lockwire around the waist of the outer side-plate of the link. My own chain has no such clearance as it has no o-rings and the inner side-plates are almost touching at the ends (very heavy duty chain).
Being missing a split-link retaining-clip (croc-clip) means that either you have fitted a poor-quality chain or not fitted the joining-link properly. If the side-plate isn't fitted snugly onto the link the croc-clip won't sit fully into the groove and can come out.
People have different methods for fitting their chain links. I use a spare link late and small G-Clamp to squeeze the joining-link side-plate fully home then I fit the clip, and paint the clip with tip-ex. I know a guy who fits his clip with loctite a day before he goes racing. Never lost a clip yet and I've used a few. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I have to say a rivetted chain is not hard to fit.
Split links are fine 99.5% of the time but once in a while they break, and the consequences at best will be a drop, at worst fatal.

Well I live to fight another day. Its cost me £85 for a new chain at £15 to fit it
The old chain was fine. Toured France on it and have done 160+ on it too. I dunno if the clip fell off yesterday or 5 mins after I checked it two weeks ago.
Most people I know have said split links alright.
Oh well live and learn!!
While I was walking back to the garage a guy on an old bike stopped and asked if I wanted a lift, as I was only 5 mins walk from the garage I said nah its alright, but he said get on any way and that he cant stand walking to garages lol

Well, I've had yet another split link go bye-bye just recently. Similar situation, the chain didn't come with a rivet link.
Now I've had three split links fail in the past so I was extra anally retentive about how I fitted this one and checked it every time before going out. Last time I checked, no keeper plate.
That's an EK chain with about 2000 miles on it and a scotoiler fitted.
Split link chains can fuck off and die. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

What do you want Method a fucking medal? Perhaps i should of put 'I' at the start of my previous post. For every person who says split links are shite their will be as many saying they have done a 100 thousand miles with split links and they have been fine.
Personal experience doesnt even come into it, and no one is jumping on his back... |

No, most likely in my experience you'll carry on and think the bike's slipped into neutral.
If something's going to go wrong, it's likely to be the chain wrapping around the front sprocket and/or breaking an engine casing.
If you're very unlucky, the chain may hit your leg, which could get very nasty if you don't have leathers on.
Sure it is possible to crash from a chain coming off, but seems pretty unlikely unless you're taking a corner right at the limit of the bike's capabilities. |
Slightly off-topic (not to do with split links persay), but I would be interested to know, of those BCF'ers who have had a chain snap while riding, what the consequnces were, ie flung off bike, leg lopped off, lowside, simply wheeling to a halt.
We do seem to have a lot of horror stories third-hand about snappage, personally i was lucky enough to just wheel to a halt when mine went at 50mph (subsequent bike damage of fucked clutch push rod and chain guard & hugger). Interested in the anecdotal statistics of those on here who have experienced it.

Couple of cable ties and it'll be allright.
If the cable ties don't hold it, try hitting it repeatedly with a big hammer. There's nowt you can't fix with either cable ties or a big hammer - anyone who says different is a liar, and possibly a gaylord too. ____________________ Space Monkey #7

First hand, no fucking about. Chains I have had fail:
Jawa + Sidecar in about 1997. I suspect the keeper plate was on the wrong way round from the factory on this one.
GPZ500s on the A1(M) near Leeds in 2002: Spat chain off, split link failed. Did heavy duty chain.
GPZ500s on the A595 in 2004: Spat chain off, splitlink failed. Did gold o-ring, scotoiler, splitlink failed.
MZ Baghira on Aberdeenshire backroad in 2003: Chain snapped, original chain. My fault really, it needed replacing and I knew it.
KLE500 on A59 near York in 2006: Chain snapped, splitlink failed. One of those Takithingummy ones, only done about 3,000 miles, scotoiler fitted.
KLE500 2007: Splitlink keeper plate gone walkabout after 2,000 miles EK heavy duty chain. Scotoiler fitted.
Now after that lot (that equates to a fuck of a lot of my life sitting waiting for a recovery truck) don't anyone DARE try and tell me I'm not fitting the links correctly. I check, check and check them again. Still they snap.
So:
Unexplained splitlink failures: 4 ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
