poppin' burblin' and cutting out... only when cold....

Fired up the ZZR-600 at lunchtime and it started to run a bit rough, then popped and burbled somewhat and finaly it cut out as I rolled up to a junction. opened up the choke to max and it started, then closed it a bit and the bike cut out again 40 yards further down the road as I rolled to a stop at the next junction. Whacked the choke all the way open again and it fired up, then riding along at 20mph it kangarooed a bit until I closed the choke again.

Ok, the bike seems to not like running from a cold start but it used to be ok. 2 mins with the engine running with a tiny bit of choke and it's fine when I then close the choke and ride off.

So, what's causing it? it's only when the engine is cold so I'm thinking plugs first, then leads, then filter and then fuel feed as my checklist. I'm also thinking it might be gunge in the engine so will chuck in a good dose of redex carb/eng cleaner tonight as well. I doubt it's the carbs icing as it's not been that cold around here but you never know.

Any ideas?

My old GPX was behaving a bit like that after I washed it. I poured a bit of meths (about 50cc of it) into a full tank of petrol, and it started running ok. I assume some water got into my fuel tank when it was being washed, meths absorbs water.

This is happening as soon as you start the bike, so fuel feed shouldn't be a problem - you're starting with full float bowls.
Plugs is a possibility, so check/change them.
HT leads is also a possibility, give them a good spray with WD40.

Then see if it behaves.

drain the float bowls as a first measure, then put the fuel tap on prime for ten seconds, then back to on. That should rid you of gunk in the float bowls.

cool, cheers for the advice. I'll add a splash of meths and give it a good dose of WD-40 where needed. Just need to find some plugs as my local stockist is out, oh and fix a toilet as well....
