I have used Haynes manuals many times before a few years ago when I first got into mechanicing and used them purely by finding the job in the contents, reading the job I needed and doing the job. Yet today I received the first Haynes manual I have personally bought. It was for my car, so nothing exciting, and had a proper read through the different sections... And it is brilliant.
They are so easy to understand, and go into the perfect amount of detail for jobs, but also include other bits of advice on toolcare etc...
Anyway, I seem to of now become addicted and found myself on the Haynes website seeing what other publications there are that interest me... Obviously I have ordered the SV650 manual but am also very tempted to buy a few other titles including:
Alcohol Awareness
Guide to Man
Sex Guide and loads more.

So, to the point of the post...
Have any people on here read some of the Haynes books, excluding the vehicle specific manuals, and would recommend them?
I don't enjoy reading most books but find alot of these topics interesting...
Discuss.

I've got a haynes 'welding manual' and some haynes about converting your van into a motorhome.
Not too impressed by either to be honest.
There's not many books about on the latter subject, but that doesn't excuse them from releasing a not-so-great one when they're a big company etc.

I don't think they are as good as they use to be

I've bought a Haynes manual for every car I've ever owned, the newer the car the less useful the manual.

Maybe this is due to todays cars and motorcycles being more complicated and more reliant on electronics?

They are okay for a quick reference (if you can find what you're looking for that is). I suppose they can be useful for checking specifications and tolerances.

But other than that I think they are as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.

I like them. I'm a complete monkey with a set of tools, but the Haynes does give me enough confidence to do jobs.

And then to repair whatever I fucked up with the original repair. Embarassed

The Baby one rocks, I wouldn't base your entire child rearing on the manual alone but it's good to get you an overview of the first two years and looks good on the shelf.

VW1303, CG125, CX500, Baby, CB250&400...

Laughing That's why most people buy them, me included

I usually buy one after I've f**ked up.

I once spent all day trying to remove a heater matrix from a VW golf. After getting well p*ssed off I bought a manual only to discover I'd only removed four of five screws. Embarassed explains why hitting it with a large hammer was of no use!
