a streetfighter is unfaired, has aftermarket headlights (twins mainly) Streetfighters are supposed to look mean.

A unfaired bike is not a streetfighter.

streetfighters usually have some performance upgrades too.

something like this:

What is a streetfighter?

A streetfighter is a motorcycle that has been modified from the original, usually because it's been wrecked and the owner either didn't have the funds or didn't want to restore it to stock condition. What you end up with is a custom bike, usually one that doesn't look like any other. A streetfighter can be good and beautiful, ugly and full of attitude, or just plain ugly. Imagination is the only limiting factor when it comes to making a streetfighter, that and some cash, which is why most streetfighters fall into the second or third categories.

These shots show the progression of the streetfighter. They're not all EX250's, but you get the point. On the left is your basic '03, fully-faired stock bike. Next is the "wrecked, put back together enough to ride" concept. Right center is the Frankenstein/nearly-rat-bike look, followed by minimalistic, 'frame & guts'. The final picture is what Jim Race calls "when streetfighters go wrong".

The way I see it, no, not at all.

A sports bike to my mind is a bike that was /designed/ for sports riding, usually with a full fairing, fairly high pegs and low clipons.

A streetfighter, to my mind, is a sports bike that has been adapted for urban use, by taking fairings off and sticking some wide bars on, possibly with some other mods to make it quicker steering with more usable power at low speed.

However, some people think that if they stick renthal bars and some small lights on a bandit it will be a streetfigter. If it has an expensive paintjob, then it's a very good streetfighter. I generally have a low opinion of the people that think this Razz.

go round your mag shop, look for the magazine called Streetfighters.

those bikes are pure and utter orgasmic IMO. you can see the sheer amount of hard work that's gone into making them all so custom.
cover looks like this.

A Streetfighter is a custom bike reflecting the choices, opinions and riding/etc of the owner.

Just the same as a lowrider, rat, chop etc reflect the personalities of their riders.

Streetfighters as a rule are naked, built around hidiously torquey motors and are supposed to be quick. IMO they aren't supposed to be pretty, they are supposed to be muscle bikes.

Nitro was a common mod, I'm not sure if it still is.

Look at the Bandit again and you'll see random shiney bits which probably don't appear on your Wifes bike. He isn't saying that the Bandit is a 'fighter, he is saying the bolt on parts make it a customised Bandit.

I guess another rule of thumb could be it isnt a streetfigther until someone has taken an angle grinder to it.

thats the best thing about streetfighters, you can't just point at it and say oh it's an FZR750, because the engine may be an R1 unit, seat unit from a mito, forks from an Srad 750 etc.

The purple bike started off as a fireblade I think.

As above, I obviously differentiate 'streetfigter' as a certain subset of bikes, while by the definitions many people use, a cruiser or supermoto would just as well be a streetfighter Smile.

not all that often engine work is done on a fighter, they are mostly stock engines,

but every one has there own idea what a fighter is, but chances are if someone points out that a bike isn't a fighter, they fucken have never made one them selves, so should shut the fuck up.
the guys who have built fighters know that they come in all shapes and sizes, just like women Very Happy some are ugly but some how still manage to get ridden Very Happy

Yeah, people take the fairings off their bikes, stick an aftermarket light on and claim its a street fighter. No way.

A street fighter is modded excessively, a few quid spent. Heres a pic of my mates '79 Z1R.

So if one was to remove the fairing, replace with a simple round headlight, tidy away the wiring and get rid of the faffy bits, keep the sports riding position and alter the sprocket sizes on the final drive in order to give a lower top speed, would it be acceptable to call that bike a "roadster"? That's no fighter, that's a motay. Wink

A streetfighter to me is a streetbike that's been modified beyond generic tarty stick on bits usually with a fuckload of tuning thrown in with it.

I remember when the first streetfighters appeared in BSH, at the time they were usually sportsbikes that had been crashed and then brought back to life without the fairings, usually had renthals stuck on em, a polished frame and sometimes a nice paintjob but nearly all had the fook tuned out of em, sometimes with nitrous kits. As i remember most of the early ones were based on the GSXR's. As with most things they evolved from the basic rebuild and tunes into the beautiful machines we see in streetfighters mag and dotted about the place. So in effect, everyones right Smile

I have a bit of a soft spot for a well-engineered streetfighter. Embarassed Love to look at them, hate that I will probably never be able to ride one cos of my short legs! Mad

I think this is possibly the nicest 'fighter I have ever seen, spotted at the Faro rally last year.

Whereas if I was to actually build one I'd kinda like this one!

baby Yam, thats the most ugly tail unit I've seen on a 'max...

This is my gsxr750 streetfighter. Notice the stubby exhaust, triumph rear, nice CANDY red wheels and Simpson Detour headlight... It sounds amazing Thumbs Up It's definately a streetfighter

https://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q73/funmonkee/IMG_0023-1.jpg

Now here's my Vmax. I don't regard my 'max as a street fighter (yet). Yeah its got a sporty tail, different size rear wheel, a tarty clear water pump cover, and it now has a braced swingarm... but these are just performance and tarty bits. My gsxr is a fighter...or the home of a rats nest (the wiring).
