Looking at a few different bikes at the moment one of them being the Aprillia RSV. Now for around 4000+ i could eather get the 00/03 RSV-R with Ohlins shock and light forged wheels, or the 04/06 RSV-R wich despite having the same name is the base modle without the fancy extras. Which one would you have if you had the choice? And all of you twin haters out their keep your big in-line 4 noses out Wink

I've got a feeling the newer one came with one of the fancy bits?

Aprilia's claim was that it was as good as the old fancy one, so kept that name for the base model, of course they would say that Smile.

You might wanna pm Soulrider. He's just bought one of the old ones and is loving it.

On a personal note, I love the look of the new ones. In white I reckon its even better looking than the 1098!

Go for the latest and greatest RSV-R, the ride is as good as the older top end model. As for the italians being all show and no go, the RSV is far from that, the huge V-Twin thumpthat you get is just awesome and will catapualt you like nothing else. Though be warned that getting parts can be a bit of a waiting game, it's taken two weeks to get a part for mine, + a airbox gasket...

So far my experience on the RSV is limited as I only recently bought it when I upgraded from a Thundercat....but as far as I'm concerned i doubt I'll be going back to an inline 4 any time soon now that I've tried a big V.

As in, nothing feels quite as slow? Razz

The litre in line 4s generally match or better the twins for midrange, but have a decent kick that comes in as you have to change up on the twin.

At least you have a sense of humour about things.

I've gone from a twin to an IL4. But will be going back to twins in no time.

Maybe its me but, trackdays aside, there's nothing more annoying than having 15k revs to play with. It's just so damn confusing!

When it comes to rev-range, I don't like anything that goes far beyond single figures.

For my next bike, I'm going back to twins.

I personally would go for the slightly older one. Single can = less expensive to change which isn't optional when you own a large twin. The original scud missile get's binned straight away. Laughing

Personally, I think those paint jobs are a bit too common...the yellow one gets me everytime. I think I've seen pitures of the yellow one in some sort of ps2 race rep paint scheme - looks the dogs bollocks.

Id rather the 04+ model, its a really great bike as standard and probably equal to the RSVR on the road if not better.
The RSVR would only benifit you on track and thats if you know how to use it.
Having ridden the RSV-R (2005) its a really really good bike, id have got one if i wasnt trying to save money.

I own the black 02 RSV-R and love it, im still healing so my confidence is not up where it should be plus weather isnt helping but i know given a dry sunny day im going to love it more and more.

Ive allways had V-twins anyway as my last bike was a SV650s, ridden a few IL4's and found them boring and allmost everyone simular in its riding style/characteristics. Allright might be fun riping it right open at high res but compared to twins for me their bit bland. I havent taken one for an extensive ride though. V-twins, expecially italian ones it seem have a unique riding style and you have to learn to ride them. I pushed my SV pretty hard on bends etc but jumping on the RSV it felt miles different and im re-learning corning techniques, body posistion etc for cornering at speed as it feels as if your sitting on the front of the bike.

As far as IL4's are faster thats rubbish, you will only notice on track in straights and when you get 150+. I was shocked by the speed and power plus the sheer grunt this thing has, at allmost any rev range. You dont need to be high up in the revs to give it some, 4-5k revs, rip the throttle open and hold on. Its an awsome feeling and then hearing the big V-Twin as you let of the throttle just makes the smile on your face bigger. My SV was fun but even in crap weather i just love this bike.

Saying that in a fews years once debt free i will change it in for new one or a ducati 1098s with termis Very Happy

One must do thing is get a new can, once ive got the money i will be, but they still sound good with the gigantic can on.

a gsxr 1000 k1-k6 for example kills all twins low down, midrange and up top but hey whos counting(unless u cheat and use an 1100cc 1098), its not rubbish to say inline 4s are faster tho, they are! some have over 40bhp more than the rsv, but in terms of usable go on the road they are close enough(if u dont go drag racing them!)
nice bike the rsv, the older ones seem to go dirt cheap privately but id go for the newer one personally

The difference in performance on the road between the hot twins and the 4's is mostly academic I think. Its extremely hard to get full use of the power of my 20 year old GSXR 1100 let alone a new 1098 or GSXR1000 etc.

I have an IL4 and do think that they are peakier.

Even looking at same brand categories:

Honda SP2 vs Fireblade

Ducati 1098 vs Desmosedici

It's obvious 4's are more powerful. (I know the desmosedici is a V4 strictly speaking, but its still 4 cylinders)

Doesn't stop me liking twins more, though...... Wink

The one thing that worries me about the RSV as i will be riding it all year round is corrosion, the polished frame would be a bit of a nightmare to keep clean and would fade and become dull, but the Jap bikes all have black frames so are alot easier to maintain.

Why not jump onto one of the RSV forums such as https://www.rsvzone.com/ and ask about corosion etc... from what i can remember whein i did my research before gettingmy bike a few weeks ago was that they hold up really well during the winter, but will need regular rinsing down as with any bike.

I couldn't say for sure but i suspect that the previous owner of mine ride through the winter and the frame is not showing any of the usual signs of winter riding....my suspission about the winter riding comes from it being equipped with some spot on heated grips, which aren't your usual sports bike addition.
