We live in order to experience pleasure, and that's it.

Discuss. Very Happy

Not much else you can add to that really. You are born, you live, then you die. You do your best to enjoy your time here, but are usually thwarted at every available opportunity by some fucker who's sole purpose in life is to make you miserable.

What about the things that aren't pleasurable though?

I mean, for every high, there's a low (to an extent).
As Guv says, depressed people, they're not experiencing pleasure. No one is all the time.

So, aren't we here just to live (exhist?), whatever happens to us? Wink

Shit happens, you get over it and look for more pleasure.

We've all met the kind of people who aren't happy unless they're miserable/moaning/ill etc...

There is no reason for existence, trying to find reason or explanation is pretty much the same as what religions do.

We live, there's nothing more to it than that. No reasons and no purpose.

the balance is between immediate pleasure, and the pursuit of more long lasting satisfaction from achieving things

only focus on hedonistic instant gratification, and you can fuck up chances of long lasting satisfaction

this means that those who in their youth pursue immediate pleasure at the expense of all else, can fuck up their lives and chances for long lasting satisfaction

although pursuit of long lasting satisfaction is never a sure thing so it can often amount to wasted effort

i work alongside a guy who was expelled from school, and a guy who left school a few years ago, has a tag for abh. I am on the same money or less than them, so why the fuck i bothered trying to get an education i dont know.

Of course if i had made a success of it I might have been somewhere else...

Id say if someone is depressed, they need to try seeking out simple pleasures, and then working their way towards bigger long lasting ones.

But everyone has a different idea of pleasure.

For some, pleasure would be happily married with two kids who they adore, and a home.

For some, it would be constantly changing sexual partners on an hourly basis.

For some, it would be the acquisition of money, property, cars or other consumables.

And for some it is the simpler things: a full moon, the sound of water running, a full belly, a glass of wine, or the adrenaline rush of bungee jumping or skydiving or indeed racing a fast bike.

We are all capable of pursuing the concepts of pleasure that we choose to amuse ourselves with. And many of us combine several of those things to our own specifications.

And those who say "But I am not/do not feel able to pursue that which I believe to be my personal pleasures" are therefore not pleasing themselves, but other people.

...which in turn gives them pleasure.

I have said for many years that every human is completely, and utterly selfish. There is no other way we can be, given that we are only able to feel our own emotions. I love seeing my daughter smile and hear her laugh because this makes me feel good - my perception is that she is happy, and so this makes me happy, but I cannot be sure. I blow raspberries on her tummy because her response fills me with joy.

Same with my partner - I do things for her because I feel good about it. Everything I do is wholly selfish.

(excuse my soppyness, partner and daughter have gone a trip away, and I'm not going to see them till Sunday night Sad)

What significant difference is there between short-term and long-term pleasure when you die after your three-score-and-ten anyway?

We live because we are alive and the alternatives death.

Death is an unknown and you might not be back here so you may as well make some use of the time. If not, top yourself and fuck off.

its about getting a balance

short term pleasure would be me staying up late today playing computer games, drinking and surfing the net

but id suffer tomorrow as id have gone to bed late and would be tired, and id be shit at my job, and do it enough times and i could get fired

so initially, all out short term pleasure decisions bring results, but long term you lose out

its about getting the right balance between immediate and delayed gratification

i dont want to fuck up my life by living for today like there is no tomorrow, but then i dont want to die with fun in the bank so to speak, having not enjoyed things because im always preparing for a rainy day, or doing useless stuff in the hope it gives me a better future

mind you i wdnt mind dieing with fun in the bank if i was passing it on to kids or something

but otherwise, its just a waste

however, id be reluctant to spend it on things i didnt think were worth the money

for this reason, suicidal people, are missing a trick. If they plan to kill themselves, they should take out a massive loan, and try all sorts of fun expensive stuff, and when the money is gone, if they have still want to kill themselves, at least they will have had some fun on the way.

The question is floored Mr. Green

'Pleasure' is a construct, it doesn't really exists. It only has meaning when compared to other constructs i.e. unpleasurable.

The plot thickens. not only does it not exist but, as mentioned, what is 'pleasurable' is subjective. Some folk experience 'pleasure' from having their testicles stamped on. It's simply our interpretation of an event.

Quote:
There is no reason for existence, trying to find reason or explanation is pretty much the same as what religions do.

I'd beg to differ. Having this conversation gives me 'pleasure' and therefore a reason to exist.

Eh? Laughing

pleasure does exist

its our bodies way of rewarding us for things that are good for passing on our dna

very real biochemical stuff

we enjoy feeling powerful, we enjoy eating, sleeping and fucking

you could say that our perception of reality is a construct, but pleasure is a bit more physical than that

Quite, but that doesn't mean pleasure exists: it's simply our interpretation of an event/stimulus.

no, pleasure is what we feel when our body rewards us

pleasure exists the same way that fear or pain exist
