I's someone comes around interested in buying your bike, and crash it while test riding, what can you do if they don't admit to doing it?

You could not give their deposit back and hand them the 'new keepers' part of the V5? Smile

Always take a cash deposit (value of bike) and there suppose to have insurance.

If the bike comes back fucked you keep the money. I suppose you could always make a little contract up if you really wanted.

What kind of insurance are you talking about? And do you usually look at a bike with money in hand, or would that be like a second visit?

Us vintage guys always get on each others bikes with that in mind. I am regulary handed machines worth 20.000 quid or more and it is understood that if I break it I fix it. My mate was recently on a SS 100 Alpine Brough Superior worth about 100K for 90 odd miles and nearly dropped it getting off at the end. You think farings cost big cash?

Yes they give you the FULL asking price in your hand or they are going nowhere on it, you dont know if they are going to come back do you? (and yes this happens allot)

If they dont have the full asking price with them then wtf are they doing there anyway? if they give you some lame excuse then tell them to come back when they do.

If they so much as scratch it then they are buying it, make this very clear to them before they go anywhere.

Insureance is up to you to check they have it, the bike must be insured by you and they must be covered at minimum 3rd party "any bike hired or loaned" on the small print of their contract.

Be very carefull selling bikes, theres some propper crooks out there Thumbs Down

As the owner you're meant to check that people have insurance (its only the third party bit which matters by law) before letting them ride your bike. Lots of people ignore that when selling bikes, as possible buyers aren't going to get insurance for a bike just to test ride it and they're not going to buy a bike without test riding it first.

Full cash asking price as deposit before test rides generally for the very reason in your original post. If they can't come up with the cash then they were never going to buy your bike anyway.

before you let them take it for a test ride, make sure they have insurance!!! the money doesnt mean shit compared to you being he one that will get the fine and points if they get pulled over and he police find they have no insurance, this happene to me, sort of,
i let my brother ride one of my bikes (thinking my insurance would cover him, i had rung them to try and sort it) he got pulled,
and who had to go to court??? it sure as fuck wasn't him!!!! apart from getting the bike confiscated and having to show them my insurance o get it back, i had to pay a 150 quid, and then issued with a court notice.
if i had a british licence i would have got 3 points on my licence and a £600 fine, luckily the judge was a good guy and just gave me points (he knew they couldnt be applied to my nz licence)
but you could get the full force of the fuct up law and get raped up the arse by the "man" for no thinking about it,
never let any one ride your bike with out insurance!!

If they are serious about the bike they will have cash in hand.

As to ins, that will depend, but make sure you check they have at least 3rd party... A lot of policies now DO NOT cover you for this.....

Just add a note to the add that NO test rides unless full value deposit, cash NOT CHEQUE and proof of insurance.

I've wondered what would happen in such a situation if they say took it without your consent ... "I said they could /sit/ on the bike, I gave them the key to take it out of steering lock, no I would not like to press charges or offer evidence that they stole my bike".
