I never read the whole story, infact I never read the first couple of lines. But I can deduce this: It is wholy possible. As most machinery these days is computer controlled (most running dedicated programs through DOS) everything is accessable. And in this day and age to save a worker going out of his office to change settings on certain machines in a factory such as that, the machines can be reprogrammed from a networked machine. If somewhere along the grapevine of this network there is one single connection to the outside world, that machine can be accessed through the internet, if the person knows what they are doing.
