Lazy Sunday afternoon, my mind is wandering and fell upon the idea of small plates and how various constabularies seem to be under the misapprehension that having a small plate means you are attempting to pervert the cause of justice.

Now this is a contentious point as if you are stopped and an officer raises the charge it's quite easy to defend by simply saying 'How can I be attempting to pervert the cause of justice, i.e. do a runner when I have stopped?'

I figure it's time to turn the tables on the forces of justice who have had their way to long. If having a small No. plate in their view is attempting to pervert the cause of justice them why do so many Police officers private cars have Black rat stickers on them if not to denote they are Police officers looking for favourable treatment and in so doing attempting to pervert the cause of justice?

If you are speeding and have a small plate, then they can make the claim of 'perverting the course of justice' by stating the purpose of the small plate was to make the bike less easy to identify, and therefore aid you in your crime.

being stopped for having a small plate is being stopped for technically not displaying a registration mark. This cannot be perverting the course of justice, since the crime you have been stopped for is the small plate itself.

You can only pervert the course of justice if it is in relation to another crime.

Having a blackrat sticker on their car only tells the officer that the individual is another member of the force. It's up to the officer to decide whether that makes any difference. For a 'professional' officer it shouldn't. Bear in mind that since you can get a blackrat sticker on Ebay now, I doubt very much if it would make any difference. Also, the blackrat thing was predominately a SE thing.

Which makes no difference under Law as the attempt is still there so I fail to see what point you are trying to make exactly?

Got bored so I emailed ACPO the following...

Dear Acpo
In light of the year or so old policy of prosecution for small No. plates and some forces attempts and/or threats at prosecution for 'attempting to pervert the cause of justice' while using them does ACPO have any policy on the use of 'Black Rat' stickers on the rear of officers private vehicles and the possible attempts at use of such to avoid stops and potential prosecution?

He also doesn't pull people over for small or illigal plates. Thumbs Up

ACPO recommends since June 06 that any plate that cannot be read at 20.5 metres should result in prosecution.

Result in prosecution for what? Failing to display the correct size registration plate or perverting the course of justice?

I've been stopped 4 times (on 2 different bikes), If I remember correctly, and fined twice, for displaying a plate that's too small. I've only heard perverting the course of justice mentioned if you intentionally deface the lettering or modify the letters on your registration plate, never heard of anyone who's actually been done for it though.

Only reason I rode with small plates was because the 2 bikes came with them and I couldn't be bothered changing them, got a standard one now as it came with the bike, wouldn't go to the effort of actually getting a small plate as it'd only invite a bored traffic cop to perform another blue light pursuit through heavy traffic to pull me over for such a terrible offence.

I'm guessing that means Read by an ANPR?
Surely they cant do it by eye? everyones eyesight is different.

My plate is 1/2 size of a standard plate. but Can easily be read at 20 meters. Unless of course Ive pulled it off and stuck it to the velco on the inside of the screen. (Velcro plate).

only had to do this once btw.

Ive never been pulled up about my plate.
