3rd suicide attempt this week.

Yet again he is saved at the last minute, to be returned to his cell where he will continue to rot until they let him out (unlikely) or he dies.

So why waste any more taxpayers money keeping him in jail? Why not let him die, he won't exactly be missed.

hmm, part of me says let him die, I mean he's a constant reminder to the victim's parents just as Bradley and Hindley were. Then there's another part of me that says he should suffer, and if death is what he wants then that's exactly what he shouldn't get. Tough call glad it's not mine, if we had the death penalty for his crimes then we wouldn't have this problem, the financial cost is almost irrelevant.

Letting him kill himself is letting him take the quick and easy cowards way out. He should serve the time for what he did, if he actually wanted to kill himself then the time to do it was before he got arrested, he only wants to kill himself because his life is shit now.

It isn't wasting taxpayers money, it's showing that crimes that like do get punished and there's no choice about the punishment.

The overwhelming majority of self-harm and apparent suicide incidents/threats that I deal with are attempts to manipulate or condition officers into providing something that the detainee wants - be that better conditions, a favourable decision on something, more attention, etc.

As far as I'm aware, Huntley has shown no signs of remorse, so I suspect that his suicide attempts fall into the above category - or indeed are simply a method of relieving stress, safe in the knowledge that officers will be checking on him and will have to do their best to save him.

Self Harm in these circumstances is extremely selfish, and takes no account of either the detainee/prisoner's family, or the officers who have to deal with the oft-messy consequences.

If the state doesn't have the balls to execute people, it shouldn't allow their execution to occur by default because of the conditions it holds them in.

Perhaps they need to reassign his watch to a guard who has hearing problems?

the thing about the death penalty is that you have to be absolutely absolutely absolutely absolutely sure that they did it , its why they have so many appeals in the US against the capital punishment , oft due to the fact that death as a punishment is sort of irreversible.

Itchy, yeah sorry mate didn't mean to advocate the death penalty, as that's a whole discussion in itself. I just meant to offer several points of view in answer to the question. What I meant was had he been executed his "wellbeing", the taxpayer's burden, and the OP question would be irrelevant.

Is he suffering? Confused

If, as seems likely, his numerous suicide attempts are an attention-seeking gesture and he doesn't really want to die then as hellkat says maybe next time he should be found just a little too late?

Problem then being of course that there would have to be an enquiry no doubt as he is supposed to be "safe" in prison. Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating the death penalty here. However, from what I understand of his behaviour during the hunt for Holly and Jessica and then afterwards Huntley's mind may operate on a different level to most of the rest of us. Who knows if his attempted suicides are down to guilt or just boredom? Do you think he is sitting in his cell every day thinking "oh my god what did I do?" Personally I doubt it.

I have no problem with this guy no longer being alive, he serves no useful purpose as it is. He can never be released back into society and he certainly isn't going to surprise us with the fertility of his mind whilst he is locked away inside.

He's been to trial and been found guilty, which is one level of closure for the families. If it had been my kid he killed I think him being dead too would be another level of closure, but it's hard to tell having (thankfully) never been in that position.

Did Fred West not do himself in?
Or did he "just die" whilst incarcerated.

Can't remember.
World is better rid of, anyway.

Rose West is banged up in HMP Bronzefield, run by my company and just down the road from my site. By all accounts, she's as happy as (the proverbially cheerful) Larry, and enjoying all the comforts of a super-enhanced IEP regime. Every so often there is a story in the local rag - leaked by an 'outraged' screw or prisoner - detailing the latest soft treatment she's been allegedly offered.

It's actually nigh-on impossible to stop someone killing themselves if they really want to do it. Continuous suicide watches are very much the exception, and are usually only enforced for very short periods. Any con actually wanting to top themselves would have ample opportunity to do so - hence my belief that the majority of attempts are simply cries for help or ways of securing sympathy.

Hi

We won't let those totally innocent of any crime but suffering hideously to end their lives. Not sure we should let him.

Apparently done by hoarding prescription medicines. If he can survive without them while hoarding them does he really need them.

All the best

Keith

Something like keeping him alive whilst in agony would be more suitable. Clamped to a wall would be a good start, and then let the parents of the kids write messages on him with a fine tipped soldering iron. Finish off with a light sandpapering of his bellend, and a few tazer jolts.

Let him then recover, heal and repeat.

The problem with suicide is that a percentage of the failed suicide attempts will be genuine failures and not just cries for help or some other 'not really wanting to die' type of reason.
And a percentage of the successful suicides are of those who attempted as a cry for help, but actually (maybe accidentally) succeeded.
It seems that the leaving of a suicide note is a reasonable sign of a genuine suicide attempt. I wonder how many inmates leave a suicide note.

I don't think a suicide note is a reasonable sign, I've know a repeat attempter to leave them and each time it was a "look at me" attempt.

yes we do , we let these people fly out to Denmark/Holland/Sweden or Oregon where assisted suicide is legal, or the doctor leaves a syringe full of air by accident at the tableside.

The thing is we also do not know what is happening to him either...

We often get Res and The gov castigating us telling us that we do not know what the insides of prisons are like.

Thus we have to draw our influences from the popular (and unpopular sometimes) media, say like the old US prison drama Oz, or the dodgier Austrailian prisoner cell block H, maybe the shawshank redemption.

Thus in truth Ian huntly could either be in a dead cush room being treated very well, or he could be constantly gang raped by other inmates and guards turn a blind eye to it and have to wear a nappy all the time (sort of like porn stars to engage in too much anal on screen), or something inbetween.
