Hi i have now rebuilt my gs500e , 93 .
and i have noticed that it seems to take a while to warm up and runs , spluttering until it is warm. Now i live in a rather warm area so it only does this in the mornings and then about halfway to work it has warmed up enuff so it runs fine.Has any one else had this problem , as most of you guys have colder weather than i do here( south africa) and if you do what is your solution.
Thanks
Angus

Are you using the choke at all? If so are you giving it too much? If not maybe your not giving it enough?

no i have never really had to use the choke,
the bike starts almost immediately , as long as i turn the petroll off when i stop, which is now ahabit as i still have to have the carbs balanced, lol forgot it once when i had the bike just back together and ended up haveing the one cylinder fill up with fuel and the resulting hydralic lock ,(thought it was quite funny as i spent about an hour trying to figure this out and trying to jumpstart it then tokk out the sparkies and turned the motor over and had petrol all over my garage then it started straight away)
thanks

My GS did that as well, it's an antique air cooled engine so it will take a while to warm up Smile

yeah toby but how did it run when cold.as it runs unevenly and then starts running fine once it is properly warm. and i never had to use the choke, but before (the rebuild ) when i got bike it seemed to be warming up fine , but timing was out ( so had to use choke when it was cold) which i then corrected and started straight away each time. something which is a little worrying is that once it has warmed up it sometimes seems to over heat and splutters then dies, after which i have to leave it for 10-20 mins and it will then start. i saw that some people were have problems with the overflow on the tank being blocked i wonder if this could be the cause of the engine dying , if i had a spare key then i would leave it in the tank so i could check this( i assume that if i opened the tank whilst it was playing up it would release the vacuum and sort it out)

first off if you get a hydrolock then your float needle or its seat is buggered, and you will only get a hydro lock if you leave the gs in prime, (it doesn't have an off position, just . on, reserve and prime)
i would pull your airbox off clean the carbs reset the float level, check that none of the jets are blocked, make sure both your jet needle circlips are set to the middle notch, make sure that the diaphragms are in good condition and have no holes,
you can give it a basic balance by eye, just by adjusting the throttle butterflys and making sure they open and close at the same time, then give it a proper balance later on Very Happy
re-assemble everything and make sure you have a good seal on the airbox and carbs, with no air leaks,
and then you should be good to go Very Happy
good luck
Thumbs Up

hey hmmmnz yeah i had left it in prime he he, as the on position causes these bike to splutter, starve the engine for some reason.
so i use the on pos as off. but i am also a bit stupid , when i sent the bike to the mechanic to strip they swapped my spark plugs, for colder/hotter plugs? and when i put it back together i never noticed
(because when i had sent it to them i had the plugs for about a week) they should be dpr9ea-9 and they gave me back dp8ea plugs so i will have to get the correct plugs. and then see how it goes, then balance the carbs from there

Just a thought, have you checked your oil is ok? As if the barrel has been filled with fuel it will run down past the rings and fill your sump up. This would dilute your oil and render it useless. Shocked

yeah never thought about that, but have put in the new sparkies and rode out about 80 km and no spluttering ( but of course i have used it already today) and no overheating/ stalling but have noticed if i use the choke i get more power all of a sudden, as if it is actually running lean and when the choke is open that is how it should be running. So i will try balance the carbs over the weekend and will change the oil as well as i am nearing the 800km break in now anyway.
Thanks
