Just don't smoke, alot of BCF members might say differently but don't smoke when you do it.

It'll work fine as long as the height difference is great enough between the two tanks / containers. Try and use a clear pipe.

Dont swallow any though. Wink Laughing Sick

Then you're not syphoning properly.

No more dangerous than having petrol splashing around the garage. Two things, don't have any naked flames around, and don't swallow. If you get some in your mouth it's not the end of the world, have something handy to swill and spit with. I prefer beer, but I've heard milk is good.

The thinner the hose the easier the sucking!
(i'm sure a bird said to me)

But the thinner the hose the more time it will take.

You don't need to suck at all if you do it right.

You need a long bit of hose. Stick almost all of it into the container you are syphoning from so it is under the petrol (and therefore full of petrol). Kink over the end of the hose so it's sealed. Now smoothly pull the hose up, over the top of the container and down so it is below the level of the fuel, making sure the other end stays submerged. Release the kink.

The fuel should start running out.

This works because kinking the end of the tube stops the fuel running back into the container when you lift it out. As long as you are quick and smooth, the hose will remain filled with fuel until you get it out and below the level of the 'top' container. Gravity will do the rest.

Saw one of THESE being demonstrated at a landrover show a month or so back. It actually did a bloody good job. Considering getting one for the garage.

**edit: Unless of course I can find tube and a ball valve kicking around Wink

Hi

You can get automatic syphons. We have one and I have even seen them sold in Halfords. Basically a length of tube with a one way valve on one end. Put it in the tank and shake it until fuel starts to flow.

Modern petrol is pretty nasty stuff. You should avoid getting it on your skin, let alone in your mouth.

Although it could be worse. Like those people who have tried to syphon fuel out of a camper van and picked the sewage tank instead.

edit - The link Tarmacsurfer put is the thing we have and which I have seen for sale in Halfords.

All the best

Keith

God kids should watch more of the older action movies.

Lethal Weapon 3 style.

Get you some garden hose and suck it out.

Just make sure no ones got a gun and tries to set the petrol on fire by shooting it.

I could get one of these types of things for £1.50 from a local motorist store but it would be a week or so before I could go and get one , plus I don't know if they are any good or just a con.

Will have a go with some clear pipe later on tho.

Cheers.

I bought 5 of those off ebay a couple of years ago, use em for a variety of things, including syphoning petrol from my bike. works a treat and saves getting a gobfull of fuel. Well worth the money.

You can get very cheap plastic hand pumps ( got mine from a chandlery ) that you can slip a bit of hose onto to get into the tank. I had to do it once when my Nova got written off, had a full tank of fuel and the breakers were coming to get it the next day, I didn't want a mouthfull of petrol. Took fucking ages. Was in a public car-park too, many people came and went, no one said anything or did anything... Go London, home of the brave!

Jamie, those things that you linked to do work well. We've got a few of them at work and they get used all the time.

put most of the tube in the tank you are syphoning from

then put your thumb over the end of the pipe

pull more of the tube out of the tank, leaving some in

the petrol level will not drop in the tube as your thumb doesnt let air get in

as long as the end of the tube with your thumb on it, ends up lower than the end in the tank, when you release your thumb, it will flow just fine

The syphon pumps you linked work great Jamie. Got one in Dubai for when we go camping to get water out of our plastic water tank.

Syphoned the 'proper' way before, won't do it again. Ended up burping petrol flavoured burps and had to constantly watch out for my friends trying to run up to my mouth with lighters Laughing
