Any you guys any good at math and could explain things to my son, hes trying to do his homework and I am total crap at math so can't help him.

Hes talking common factors of numbers multiples ect and its goble di gook to me????????

question 1.

Write the following numbers as the product of their prime factors using index notation
a) 210
b) 30
c) 78
d) 24

question 2

Using this information or other wise calculate the HCF and LCM of the following pairs
a) 24&30
b) 24&78
c) 30&78

Non of this makes any sense to me at all

Should he/she not ask their teacher if they dont understand how to do something, so they can be taught how?

No point just telling him/her the answers, get full marks, but still dont have a clue how to actually do the maths.

Dont want the answers i want someone to explain the question so he can work the answers out himself.
And if the quality of teachers at his school are anything like the one i spoke to this morning who would rather rush off to a meeting than discuss my sons wellbeing then i canunderstand why he dont want to ask them.

Possibly if someone can take him through the process on how to work them out on one of the numbers in each question he can work out the others for himself

Thanks everyone, he thinks hes got it, he looked on the site you gave Drew, says some of it doesn't make much sense form what his teacher told him before buts hes put figures to paper and will hand them in with his workings out and see how he gets on.

This is EXACTLY what busted my balls about mathematics as a subject. They take a totally pointless exercise, couch it in unintelligable drivel to make themselves sound important then complain when their students aren't enthusiastic and don't get the point.

I've got an advanced level science degree (somewhere between an honours degree and a masters) and that question was totally unbintelligable to me. Once explained, I still don't get the point of why you would ever want to do it, there would appear to be no practical application for the knowledge whatsoever. It is moving numbers about for the sake of it.

I've not been exposed to that type of maths for quite some time and it STILL makes me angry that I was forced to do it as a subject at school. If they could explain why the flaming hell you would ever want to do something like that in everyday life (or even as a nuclear physicist), I would probably have sat and done it. Any time I asked the teacher how one would translate the exercise into something useful with an application for something other than pure number crunching, I was sent out of the room for being impertinant.

To me math should be plain and simple, multiplication, add, subtract and divide.

My son has gone to bed now, not in any kind of happier mood i might add as he still says its goble di gook. (hes right to)
