I have not used my CD/DVD drive for quite a while now. I have not needed to install anything and I have not played any games on here for a while.

I was looking for a CD for my dad yesterday and I wanted to check it was the right one, I stuck it in the drive, pressed "Win+E" and
https://homepage.ntlworld.com/highlander_pj/images/drives.jpg
There were no CD or DVD drives listed, there should be one DVD-ROM and one CDRW.

I looked in device manager and saw there was a problem with both of the drives. I can not think how or why it happened and do not know how to correct it. It says there is a problem in the registry
https://homepage.ntlworld.com/highlander_pj/images/dvd.jpg
I have tried re-installing it, it comes up with the same error, I have checked the IDE cables inside, there fine and I ran Norton Win doctor, nothing.

Any ideas?

This may help:

https://www.winportal.com/chat.asp?ObjectID=4951

I had this same problem when Adaptec's Direct CD got corrupted upon 2nd reboot. Both of my CD/ROM's disappeared. I had to end up doing the following: Regedit 1. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 2. Restart your computer. This worked for me and my disappearing CD/ROM problem. I don't know if it will work for your instance but if you are comfortable with editing the registry then it would be worth a shot. If you aren't comfortable then make a backup of your registry before you start and you can import it back in returning everything to where it was. Good luck and I hope it helps. If not, and you didn't install or uninstall anything prior to this happening then most likely your only solution is to partition and reinstall the operating system.

Cheers

FIrst thing I'd try is checking the cables are securely plugged in.

Then check they are set correctly in the BIOS.

After that I'd get the latest motherboard drivers and reinstall them.

If nothing then try running just one drive at a time, maybe try one
on the Hard disk cable as well.

They are not working at the moment anyway, so I can not really hurt anything more than it already is.

Would going into the registry and deleting all keys relating to the CD / DVD drives do anything?

If I type the error message into google, it comes up with a few replies:

Bit crap

Worth trying I think if I get some feedback from here

It seems like a system restore is in order according to some more of the results from google?

I disabled that option.

Ooops, just actually read your post...

I wouldn't just go and delete everything relating to CD/DVD in the BIOS, could lead to bad results generally.

The second link you put up most probably refers to that pioneer drive, so may well not exist for you.
However the first link suggests that you /will/ have to do something like that.
Might be worth checking out/emailing the support site for the manufacturer of the drives.

I read about the upper and lower filters somewhere else too, I followed that registry key above and
https://homepage.ntlworld.com/highlander_pj/images/reg.jpg

I dont have any upper filter settings, could be specificaly for that drive, but like I said, I read it somewhere else too.

When you turn the computer on are the drives listed in the bios?

If you can answer no to that question then the dvd drive has died!

I bought a new one to replace my dead one about a month ago, I must say it's alot nicer then my old one and it was about 26 pound afaik, if it's in the bios then chance are your operating system is messed up, shove in your windows cd and reboot your computer hit a key to make it boot cd. if you don't get the boot message chance are your bios is set not to check for cd drives on boot up.

If you get the operating system disk working, try windows repair.
Please note that this is what Dav^^ would do in a similar situation and that Dav^^ is not responceable for any damage to your, your equiptment or your life resulting in you actually listening to him Exclamation

Dont have a Windows disk, there was nothing supplied with the PC, I think it was some full factory restore thing. I hate doing that, I always end up loosing all my stuff Sad

P_J,

I think Windows XP and Windows 2000 use the same method to sort out drivers / hardware.

Try this, right click My Computer, go to Properties, then to Hardware tab, look for Hardware Wizard and click on it.

Click on Next, check mark Uninstall/Unplug a device, click Next, check mark Unistall a Device, click Next, then put a tick in Show Hidden Devices.

In the main window you will see all the devices that have been installed, look for the two CD-ROM drives and remove them, you will have to run the Hardware Wizard twice to do this, once for each CD-ROM drive.

I take it that the Intel(R) 82810E Graphics Controller has been removed from the PC as well, or is this built into the motherboard ?

If it's built in on the motherboard, do not uninstall it, but if it was a plug-in card and has been removed, un-install it in the same way as you have un-installed the CD-ROM drives above.

Once you have done this, reboot the system and let WinXP find the drives again.

This should do the trick.

Just one extra thing, see the picture below, see the CD-ROM drives, if you see more than one of each drive, remove them all, even if it's a CD-ROM drive thats been taken out of the PC.

I did try uninstalling them both and letting windows reinstall them before but that never worked. Just tried uninstalling them again but re-booted this time. Did not work. Evil or Very Mad

How can doing noting fuck up your PC so much?!?

Just sounds like a driver problem to me. You tried new IDE's? Or even better - putting the drives in another computer to see if they work there?

Get the latest drivers for your DVD & CD ROM if you haven't already.

OK, try this.... (info found here >> https://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314060 << based on the code 19 error (Code 19).

If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

3/ On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4/ Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5/ On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6/ Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7/ Restart your computer.

Norton came up with nothing. Simple re-boot and it is working again!!!

Kev, did you get yours working yet?
