VFR400 NC24 - Air Filter

I've taken the top off of the air box and there is no filter there but the bike seems to run okay. Would it make much of a difference putting an air filter (just a standard one) in it? Like, would I need the carbs rejetting or not?

Why would somebody do something like this? My dad reckons that it alters the emissions slightly, so it may have been done for an MOT. Or the air filter may have been removed because it was all clogged up and never replaced.

could be a couple of reasons i think. One is to get an induction roar which the filter would reduce. the other as found on my VFR-if its an old filter it may have just disintegrated and been eaten by the engine but i doubt this very much. Id go with the 1st suggestion.

If i were you i would get a replacement as it does filter out the sand and dust particles from entering the engine.

But if I put a standard air filter on would the carbs need rejetting?

They shouldn't need rejetting - it had an air filter as standard, someone has removed it. I doubt they were in the habit of spending lots of cash rejetting it they aren't running an air filter.

If I were you I'd be going over the bike very carefully to weed out all the other problems now. If a previous owner ran it without an air filter, you can reasonably expect every other bit of maintenance to have been ignored.

That's what I'm gonna do. It's just little things like oil filter, oil change, spark plugs, ht leads, lube the chain etc. Just things that aren't too difficult for a complete novice such as myself.

Make sure you know what your doing with the plugs on the 24, You need to slacken the radiator, and drop / lean it forward, thus making enough room to get to the plugs.

Dont forget to use a piece of hosepipe to reach the plugs, and turn them in/out.

If I had bought a bike with no air filter Id be checking how much shit has made it through into the engine by seeing how much dirt is around the butterfly/carb/airbox etc, remember thats what they are there for in the first place, and the amount of shit iv seen on air filters is unreal!!!
