3 in 1 oil?

is it alright to lube the chain with?
atm i've made my own manual scottoiler system for the huge cost of £6 and half hour of my time. its fed by a bottle of 3 in 1 oil atm, which i will refill using a small funnel. but will 3 in 1 oil be ok to lube it with? it would save with the whole refilling thing.. just buy a new bottle for a couple of quid.

It depends how light the oil is, you may or may not want it to fling off more to take the crap with it. It's a matter of opinion really what oil you use, whether it be oil specifically chains or used chip pan oil...chainsaw oil.... scottoilers oil... your choice

I'm interested in your system though, please do post pictures and maybe a guide of how to make it and where to get the parts from. How good is it? Is it vacuum fed or a little squeeze bottle?

Hi

I have used the stuff when I have needed to lube a chain and have no chain lube handy (most petrol stations seem to stock it). Does fling off fairly easily.

To be honest I would be tempted to just use used engine oil in your chain oiler.

I use very well used diesel engine oil on my chain, but I don't use an oiler. It does fling a little bit, but it shouldn't fling too much unless your oiler drips too much on...

well my oiler isn't really designed.
i went into the local fish shop (aquarium type, not the chippy kind)
and got some 6mm "airline" tubing at 50p a metre, and then two "airline" valves at 50p a piece. I then "borrowed" the end off of a oil pump (one of those little hand held jobbies) which had a 6mm fitting on the end of it
then sort of ran it, cable tieing it everywhere with the valves on show.
ATM mine is fed out of a 3in1 oil container which is cabletied up out of the way with two tiny holes punched in the other end (they let air in so the oil can flow out, without them it isnt going to work)

i've got plenty of airline left, but im going to adapt the system so that i can use a different pot. also the place i've put the tub means that it could possible still get dis-lodged and fall into the back wheel(it's cable-tied up but i dont like there being ANY chance of oil being on the back wheel).

I've been using 3 in 1 lately and it's been fine. Admittedly I have to put it on more than any other lube I've used in the past but my chain seems to be lasting longer aswell so it can't be bad!

3-in1 is a bit thin, Asda 20W 50 motor oil 99p/L would be better.

sorry for the slight hijack. How does this unit benefit the chain? apart from oiling it. Is it really needed? if so i will make one.
