Anyone been to New Zealand, an oportunity has come up where i may be going to new zealand for 3 weeks in dec/jan next year. Just been looking at tour prices and bike retal prices - they seem fairly reasonable to me.

from another thread, i read that you dont need to buy insurance in new zealand, so rather than doing a tour or hiring a bike, it would be easy for you to buy one and ride that

Fantastic country and scenery- quiet/lacking in people compared to the Uk.

I bought a car while in new zealand. Needed a car to carry the rucksacks. No problem with insurance. I can't remember seeing that many bikes for sale though.

Well worth it if you can go.

The roads are very different to the Uk. Much less traffic but people drive very quickly. You'll see loads of homemade roadside memorials and flowers where people have been killed.

Roads can suddenly change from being well surfaced and maintained to roads similar to country lanes in the UK outside of the towns and cities so maybe take your time get used to the different driving conditions.
